After a very long lapse (during which I regained half the weight I lost last year!) I am going to try to start again - "fasting" three days a week (though last time I tried it had become much harder - I binged each fast evening!!). I may ease up a bit on the restriction in order to make it possible - say 600 cal? Does that defeat the purpose?

600 still puts your body in starvation mode. How about trying smaller more permanent changes to your diet for a more healthy and permanent weight loss?

Fasting does not work long term. You will spend your life losing the same 30 pounds until you find an eating habit you can use for the rest of your life. Going on a diet also means you will at some point go off that diet and gain everything back. Weight is just one aspect of overall health. Eat a healthy 1800 calorie diet and exercise and you will be fine.
