Becky hardy's Journal, 19 February 2014

On December 13th my husband was diagnosed with Thymic Cancer. Beginning Jan 2nd I had to drive him to Fox Chase Cancer Center a daily 3 hour + drive. Of course we were having the worst weather possible and there were times when the drive took over 7 hours. During his Chemo and Radiation treatments we would leave the house around 6 am and not return until 7 pm. I ate out all the time and usually we ended up at McDonald. I did not know one could put on 20 pounds in two months. I am sure that 5 of it is water wait and I will loose it right away but still what is up with that. During this time I was doing everything from the smallest task to hard tasks like shoveling the driveway multiply times. My husband can do nothing because he has restricted blood flow and is very weak. Even though I was doing no exercise during this whole time I was running my butt off with daily task. But the problem was a lot of my time was spent sitting because I was waiting for my husband to finish his treatments. I guess because I was so active before it just took a toll on my health. My husband will have to have surgery in a month or so now that the radiation and Chemo Therapy is done and I just started exercising again so I have my work cut out for me.

Caregivers often end up with their health suffering. You did and are doing what you need to for your husband. It sounds like your days were just insane and adding the task of packing healthy lunches, etc. would just have been too much for you. Accept that it was a necessity and move forward. Soon enough you'll have your time to work out and eat healthier. Prayers go out for your husband to heal and for you to have the physical and emotional support you need.

Today is my second day sticking to a diet and the first day that my husband has ventured out of the house one his own. He drove to work to see the GUYS which gave be a break to spend some quality time with my grandson. I made him a grilled cheese and carrots and did not even sneak a bite even though he left a quarter of the sandwich. I just munched on the carrots. It was a great day.
