Sandy701's Journal, 07 January 2014

Compared to everyone else's entries, we're warm down here with 19 degrees overnight, but I believe this ties the record from somewhere back in the 1920's. We may not go above freezing all day, but might be close to 70 by the weekend! What a swing!

Still....for now, my fingers are cold and my feet have been so cold, I've resorted to wearing substantial shoes to keep them warm rather than lighter slides.

I'm paying closer attention to my foods and am feeling marginally less bloated. A few more days of this and I should be back to feeling "normal" even if the scale reads higher than it ought. It's a revelation to me how uncomfortable I can feel when I don't stay with the right foods in the right amounts. I want to rebel and have all sorts of off-plan foods or too much of the on-plan stuff, but I don't feel good afterwards, I really don't. In the moment, I like it, but... My body does not like it. The problem is that sometimes the head (and the mouth) forgets what the aftermath feels like - LOL!

I'm not going anywhere today! Staying home and inside where it's warm I'll make a haircut appointment for Thursday when it should be about 50 degrees or so. I've turned into such a wimp since living in the South.

Sadly, in a mall in the region, an anchor store - an ANCHOR! - is closing! The company still has locations elsewhere and is staying open, but the loss of an anchor in a mall already struggling might just push it over the edge. There's already one wing of this mall that has nothing in it....it's just a long, dark, hallway to one of the anchor stores (NOT the one that's closing, surprisingly).

For my entire life, malls were wonderful collections of merchandise you couldn't get anywhere else. It was THE place to shop. Much of the retail part of my career was spent running mall stores. To see a mall begin to deteriorate with store after store closing, with no replacement businesses coming in, is so sad. The end of an era, I guess. The Internet, mega-big box stores, and unique strip malls seem to be capturing the consumer dollars.

I think Holiday indulgences are once a year reminders of how good our WOE really is. I am still getting rid of my bloat too - chubby fingers are so unattractive! And from one mall lover to another, I am sorry about the impending closing of yours. I have the same situation - mall closing due to new strip mall. Had to do lots of my Christmas shopping on stormy days and was thinking how much nicer it would have been if all these stores were under one roof.

Don't know whether to say sorry that those foods make you fee like that, or glad that they do, so you can learn to avoid them. LOL. I feel the same when I eat crap yet I still do it too. We never seem to learn do we. I am sure you will be back where you want to be real soon.

I'm beginning to think we live in the same town :-) it was 17-19 overnite here too and only in the 30's now and I am a wimp and hate it. I want at least 60 degree weather so I don't ACHE so much. My right hand was throbbing last night and I just know it was arthritis and the cold. PLUS - the mall we have in town, the one that used to be so 'hot' that it was the anchor mall for the smaller surrounding town folk not wanting to go to THE CITY - it's been falling down year by year too. In fact - the anchors are the only stores open and it IS a long dark walk from one end of them to the other. Good exercise but depressing. AS you said ... end of an era. Hope both of ours recover - we need something special AND local.

Buffy, this year I guess I needed a good slap upside the head from the holidays to make me realize this. Better getting that slap now than getting it 50 pounds (or more) later! As for the store closing, I guess I have to own up to my share of the blame...I've actually purchased very little at that specific store in the couple of years we've lived here. Although I've shopped there, it's hard to settle for something when you know you can probably find exactly what you want online.

Issy, I have to say I've learned something different with each holiday season I've been on this WOE. Let's hope this year's lesson sticks!

Just might be close Bella. We're up to 34 degrees at close to 2PM....wow....a veritable heat wave! Still....I'll take it over those teens any day! I think this mall could recover, but it would take a major renovation to do some alterations to the building itself, maybe transforming it into one of those Main Street styles that's smaller and can accommodate smaller retailers, and the resulting lower rents. But right now, it just looks like it's not going to make it. Even the sit-down, rather nice restaurant, that had an entrance to the outside as well as the mall, pulled out. :(

Good evening Sandy...sorry I'm so late...but just now finished eating my lunch after taking care of the farm stuff...Its 15 til 4pm...will probably have a late supper...but before my 8pm dead line...LOL...It goes to show what the economy is doing when all those stores leave...I guess I am lucky in that I won't miss them as we had to drive so far to go to them any way...Now if Wal Mart closed..that would be a different story...LOL... Stay warm...it won't be long before it warms up for ya...:O)..As for our woe we really can tell when we go off in the wrong direction...
