doublecheese's Journal, 02 January 2014

Only had 1091 kcal today. Should I go and eat a light snack? It's 11.50 PM though and I'm about to go to bed

Edit: Eating more starting tomorrow, cause only eating about 1100 kcal a day and burning over 2000 can't be healthy

Edit 2: According to the formula in The Blue Box's journal, my BMR is 1435.
If I have a lightly active lifestyle I should multiply it by 1.375
So my TDEE is 1973.125?

If I want to lose 1 lbs a week, I should eat 1475 calories, right?
So I would be at my goal weight around May this year?

I've only seen this entry now! It always helps to eat something light before going to bed to help sleeping. I've seen something about not eating before you go to sleep making it more difficult to sleep, and making protein synthesis less efficient which lead to muscle loss and weight gain. And yeah, you don't need to push yourself too much, or you risk wanting to quit too much :)

But you are really giving it the beans! :)

Yes, regarding what you say about eating too less, you have a great point! A recent study showed that very low calories (which are equivalent to low calories with a very calorie expenditure), in absence of enough proteins, can use organ tissues (including from the heart) to repair tissues elsewhere :P which is definitely not good so it's good to respect the minimum proteins and not just. Also fibers, vitamins and other essential nutrients and water (because most water we ingest is in food) have to be ingested in enough quantities.

Regarding BMR, at least with me, those numbers didn't get me very far. I got much more reliable results by using that website I mentioned earlier. The problem with the BMR is that it only tells you the calories you spend without doing absolutely anything which doesn't quite depict reality ;)

oops you're taking your activity level into account ok, that's good. I answered before reading all of your post lol (shouldn't have). I can't tell you for sure about those numbers. Besides being terrible at math, although I've done those calculations in the past for me, I really don't remember how they work now. And I also don't remember if they worked for me. I just remember I stopped using it I don't remember why :P You can try comparing your number with that site I was telling you about to see if it matches. Ultimately, if the results will well you if those numbers are correct :)

Your decision. Some theorize that you burn more fat if you go to bed hungry. So many theories - LOL.

I meant to say we're "now" at very similar weights, not "not" lol. Also, I am sorry to say that I've mixed two different studies together. One of the studies that says your body may resort to harvest proteins from your vital organs. While this happens especially when you're resting or during your sleep, it doesn't have anything to with eating before going to bed. It has to do with not eating enough protein in a day, generally speaking. The study I read about not eating before going to bed mentioned the release of an enzyme that would heighten your state of awareness during the night (possibly a hunter gatherer instinct so you would wake up when a potential prey walked by and snapped a twig or something lol). This heightened state of awareness will lead to reduced protein synthesis which means loss of muscle tissue (including vital organs) since protein synthesis is how muscle tissue repairs. Now, I also believe that theory that you will immediately burn more fat if you go to bed hungry since your body will more quickly turn to burning fat in the absence of food. I think these two theories coexist heheh. I don't know which one of them results in losing more weight though...

by the way I didn't read the studies literally. I read articles mentioning the studies. That is a distinction I should probably make :)
