Katirae's Journal, 16 October 2010

Last night was date night, our first one in many, many, MANY months. I decided it would be the night that I got my long awaited, big, indulgent cheeseburger. Woohoo! The anticipation was killer.

We went to Ruby Tuesday, because I have always loved their burgers. A year ago (or even a little less than a year ago), my order would've been Dr. Pepper, spinach and artichoke dip with endless supply of tortilla chips. Dinner would be the bacon cheeseburger as it appears on the menu (though I would've stripped off all the veggies upon its arrival, and enjoyed the globs of mayo on it), and the side of fries would've been close enough to a veggie for me.

Instead, I ordered unsweetened iced tea, the salad bar, the bacon cheeseburger (I almost chickened out of ordering it, but I've been wanting a real burger for sooo long), no mayo, and a side of broccoli (as well as the side of fries). After we ordered, I went up to the salad bar and got a huuuuge, delicious salad: spinach, green peppers, carrots, cucumbers, corn and black beans, and all kinds of yummy stuff. Took it back to the table, and it was tasty. So tasty, in fact, that by the time the waitress brought our meals, I was mostly full.

I have to say, though- when she put that plate of burger and french fries on the table in front of me, I was confronted by this huge wave of emotions. The first was just bafflement: how in the WORLD could anybody be expected to eat a burger THAT BIG?! I was kind of embarrassed, also: eating an entire burger like that was pretty much a non-event before, something I never thought twice about. I know I would've eaten the entire pile of fries next to it, as well, without a second thought.

Intimidated by the giant burger in front of me, I started on my broccoli. Then I decided that if I was going to eat any of that beast, I needed to go ahead and do it, because I was almost full already. I cut a quarter of the burger out to eat it, and... well, yeah, it was (almost) as good as I remembered. But that was all I could eat of it! I ate exactly two fries, and they weren't good; not as fresh as they could've been, and just too greasy for my liking. So I didn't eat the rest of them. That's another big night-and-day difference between then and now: before, I would've just eaten the whole serving of fries just because they were there on a plate in front of me. Instead, I ate the quarter of the burger, and finished my broccoli. Then I thought really hard about it, and decided to eat another quarter of the burger, with the justification that, really, when will I go out and sit down and order a burger again? Probably not for at least another couple of months, if that, especially after seeing it on my calorie counter- yikes!!! My tummy was not amused afterwards, but the tastebuds were sated, and my burger cravings are gone. I was really kind of proud to leave the french fries virtually untouched on the table when we got up to leave.

So, things have really changed for me. Old habits have died, and have been replaced by new ones. How refreshing. :)
