mars2kids's Journal, 14 August 2012

My poor dog had to go to a vet 2 1/2 hours away to have back surgery yesterday. He's doing much better today and they say he seems happier, but I feel so bad for him. We get to pick him up either Thursday of Friday. Recovery could take a few months and is going to be hard, but I just hope he can get back to somewhat normal.
So, dealing with the dog Sunday night, I didn't get much sleep, and then last night I didn't sleep worrying about the dog and the money to pay for that surgery. I'm so tired today and haven't worked out since Sunday. I'm going to try to get to bed early tonight and get up early to workout tomorrow. Kids are back to school today, so that means earlier wake up for me to get a workout in. It's going to take some time to get back into that routine, but I can do it.
Working late today and tomorrow, so I can make up for some of the time I missed yesterday and will miss either Thursday or Friday, not fun, but my poor puppy is worth it.

I understand what's keeping you up and why. For us, our dog is our third member of the family, we do not have children. (Even if we could let chem run around with no cloths on and eat out of bowl, we aren't responsible enough... ;) ) When they need special attention it's disconcerting because the whole process is made more difficult by having to go through it without clear communication; why too much activity when you have a booboo is not good, you will feel better after this thing that makes you uncomfortable right now, I know you don't feel good but exactly where does it hurt. Lots of psychic energy is spent on detective work and reassurance. And then there's the cost. Not sure about you but we didn't invest in pet insurance so we've had some out of pocket months that were really lean. Totally worth it, but major stress inducing. All of that to just reaffirm that yes, your puppy is worth all of your love and energy and you should feel that sense of "I made a good mom-thing happen because I'm a good mom". Try to get back to your routine as your own reward. You'll feel better and your puppy can totally tell. I'll be thinking about you and and Noodle sends happy squirrel dreams directly to the vet for **insert puppy name**. Together we've got 'cha covered!

It really sucks when a pet has something like this. I also know how you feel about not sleeping because your thinking 'how am I gonna pay for this?'. I went through it a few yrs ago with our cat, $2500 vet bill and it hit when we had nothing, I think we used 4 different credit cards to pay it. But, the cat is still with us and keeps us entertained daily. It will all work out. Working out will help. I can't wait for the kids to go back!

Pets are members of the family and I'd be doing the same :-). Hope the kiddos have a good first day back and you can get some rest. I'm in the same boat, no workouts and not much sleep. Going to the gym right from work some hopefully it will help with the depression and I'll get some rest. Hope we both do!

Your poor puppy! That is financially and emotionally draining!. I know it makes you feel guilty when you think of the $$$. Just remember, if you don't try when you think you should be trying...you would feel worse. Here's hoping to a smooth recovery!

Thanks guys. My son said "You can always make more money, but we will never have another Jax", and that was the clincher, my hubby told them to go ahead with the surgery after that. We'll be okay financially, but it does come at a time when we've spent money on school clothes and supplies, the state fair is coming up (which is a big deal to the kids), and we were just getting a plan in place to start saving some money. Luckily, our vet clinic is paying for it and we are paying them back because the vet he's at for the surgery doesn't take payments. I can't wait to get the little guy back and start the recovery process. Thanks for the words of encouragment!! I'm feeling better now.
