1982nodak's Journal, 21 January 2019

Yesterday was the day I began getting back on track after the holidays. I baked my way through watching the Great British Bakeoff and after all of the homemade croissants I am honestly amazed I only gained 4.2 pounds. I haven't weighed in since before Christmas.

I have a very specific new plan that has many components to it.

First is accountability and using my faith. I am going to be doing a Bible Study called Made to Crave with my grandmother as both of us do this journey together. It is a study about not having food be our god and learning to crave him for comfort and celebration instead of having food be my go too. We have ordered the materials and will begin when they arrive at the end of the month.

The second thing is my medical jump start. Yesterday was my first day taking phentromine. My thyroid doctor suggested it. My thyroid condition is a rare one that is affected by stress and when I'm stressed I need more medication and when I'm not stressed then I need less. He believes that my added weight adds stress to my body and losing weight will help the physical stress and may help make my thyroid more stable. I have also maintained a normal thyroid read since mid November and that is awesome.

The third thing is extreme food planning. I will not make it if I never indulge. I gain a lot of pride from my cooking and baking. However, I'm trying to work on plating and things that make meals more visually stunning and satisfying instead of them being calories I simply stuff down my throat. I also know I need selenium, iron, B12, copper, Iodine etc all of which I'm deficient in. I'm deficient in Vitamin D3 even though I take a 50,000IU pill my doctor prescribed with a small glass of whole milk (it only absorbs with fat and Calcium). I'm deficient in these nutrients but vitamins seem to pass through me so I'm planning on menus that have the natural version of these.

I allow two cheats per week. This coming week my cheats are a glass of wine with my husband on Friday and this coming Sunday a cupcake for my son's birthday. I have to plan my cheats and eat well around it.

I'm trying to keep my calories low, but more importantly my carbs low. I'm also going to begin intermittent fasting twice a week for 17-18 hours from 6:00/6:30PM until 11:30AM/12PM the next day. I'm reading a bunch of evidence about how intermittent fasting can repair the thyroid. I won't go full keto but will not have processed carbs or alcohol unless it is one of my two cheats. I don't consider peas or organic corn on the cob processed carbs although they have carbs.

This plan has medical, practical, relational, and spiritual components in it, all of which I hope will lead me to a new lifestyle that I can maintain.
