I need some religion or something.

Three weeks ago or so, my doctor recommended a book titled, "Why We Get Fat", but Gary Taubes. I had read a mountain of diet books over the years so I was skeptical, but I paid attention. Coincidentally, my wife was watching Forks over Knifes which advocates a vegan/vegetarian diet. Ethical arguments aside, what I found informative was the science of both agreed with each other or at least didn't conflict. WWGF said carbs were bad, FOK said proteins in excess were bad. So and LCHF diet is in agreement with the science of both. My son has been a type 1 diabetic for the last 15 years so counting carbs is not a problem for my family to begin with and having a smartphone with the FatSecret app let me look up anything I didn't know off the top of my head.

So two weeks ago I stopped eating carbohydrates, with the exception of those found in vegetables. Tomatoes and onions are the highest source of carbohydrates in my diet. The first week was amazing. I lost 11 pounds without trying. In fact, I was eating more than normal to "prove" it was all about what I ate and not how much.

This week, the only thing that has changed is I'm not eating as much. I eat when hungry and stop when full and I've gained almost all of it back. I'm having trouble making sense of what is going on. I drink black coffee, iced tea and water and that has not changed in the last two weeks. Nothing I can put my finger on would explain why I'm seeing this yo-yo. I'm not giving up. I have too much experience with carbohydrates to doubt that they are the cause of my weight problem. I just thought removing them, 0 sugar 0 flour 0 starches would drive more consistent weight loss than this.

Yea, what Tamarah Jo said. Saturated fats increase bile production and bile production is an important factor in weight loss and detoxifying.

I like to eat around 70% fat, 25% protein, 5% carbs. I still look at calories also as I am not very good at "eat when hungry/stop when full". It just tastes too good and is part of what landed me in gaining so much weight in the first place!

11 lb times 3500 calories equals 38,500 calories. You would have to have a deficit of 5500 calories per day to lose that much actual fat in a week. Since the total number of calories you actually burn per day is far less than 5500 calories, it is mathematically impossible. Thus, most of your first week's loss was water. A lot of water comes off the first week of a low carb diet. You are probably still losing fat, but the water level in your body is rising again. Whenever I got on a plateau, I stopped weighing weekly and went to monthly so I wouldn't be too discouraged.

I would head to your doctor. Your current weight cannot be sustained on only 1500 calories/day -- you would be losing at least 5 pounds a week, minimum. So I suspect that you're going to have to give up the "Eat Until I'm Full" strategy and do the traditional reduced calorie method instead.

Man, I'm learning SO much from the book I'm reading "The Bulletproof Diet". I know it would help you, but it's just too much info to type. They sell stuff on the site too, but you don't have to buy anything. This book is awesome!

This biohacker lost 100 pounds while eating like 4000 calories a day, but of the right foods.

Sodium will make you yo yo like that.

@TamarahJo & @BulletProof3, I haven't worked to get fat into my diet but I haven't avoided it. When I log my meals on FatSecret they alway say about 75% of my calories are coming from fat. This is definitely an area where I need more learning. @JosieSchmosie, Thank you for the math. There is no way I've burned 5500 calories per day so that makes so much sense.

The book advocates sodium. Sodium should NEVER be restricted if you're following a low carb diet. You will end up dehydrated. If sodium is so bad for you, why is it that the first the hospital does when you go in sick is hook you up to a bad of salt water?

Bulletproof coffee would be a good place to start getting in enough fat, plus the coffee contains lots or polyphenols with is a good antioxidant plus it feeds good gut bacteria.

Hang in there.

@BulletProof3 thanks for the book recommendation. I'll grab a copy. @irregularwaves I figured it had something to do with water. I don't generally add salt to my food, but it's possible there is more salt in my diet now that pizza and pasta have been removed.

ALL of this information your buddies shared is exactly what I would have written, too. LCHF must include the high healthy fats (70% or more), moderate protein (about 20%) and low carbs (like less than 10%) to get the body fat adapted for your energy source. I also agree to GOOGLE Bulletproof coffee and get Dave Asprey's Book for fun. I think he is a little extreme but excellent information overall.

There is a "food map" downloaded & a little info in the "Bulletproof Diet" group.

Don't panic, stop stepping on the scales, and stick with your routine. Weigh in again when your clothes fit better, I'd wait at least three months, but longer is better.

Omg. I read so many bad ideas that I will give you million dollar advise. Stick to 3 groups proteins , fats and yes even carbs Think of it as a pie and divide evenly into 3 Now every meal you have a protein , fat and carb Keep this for a few weeks and tell me your results. It works

LCHF is NOT a "bad idea" - it is backed by science, ketogenic.

LCHF works. It's not the end all and be all, but it certainly outstrips the general 'scientific' recommendations that would have us on minimal protein and high starchy carbs. Bad ideas it turns out is what the status quo is. It took North Americans to being the fattest countries in the world. We're learning to ignore the 'experts'. They're run by industry.
