nicholaix's Journal, 17 June 2015

So today I want to start a discussion because I am seeing a lot of 'drink more water' challenges. I have 2 questions for you to think about.

#1 Did your doctor tell you to drink more for a medical condition? There are a few cases where you do need more water to help ease medical side effects etc. Rarely but there are.

#2 Do you know the medical signs of dehydration? Seriously. Not just what you dimly remember that your Mom told you 30 years ago.

I actually was a crazy water nut and had all kinds of resulting issues that once I HALVED my water intake went away. Once my doctor realized how much I was drinking from my ever-ready water bottle he was amazed I never got sicker.

Some symptoms of water over hydration are insomnia, stress incontinence(ladies you know what I mean), cold extremities, headaches, peeing at night(once should be a rarity, twice is an issue).

Do some research from reputable sites(popsugar does NOT count). feel free to chime in if you have experiences that may help someone think about it.

I have read that you can over Hydrate ,, so for me I don't take drinking water to an extreme . I count my coffee and Ice tea as water consumption,, and have maybe 24-32 oz besides that. if I am up more then once a night I am pissed ( ha pardon the pun) I can tell when I am dehydrated and then I take action . .

Other diet community leader recommends half your body weight or no more than 100 oz.

100 oz is if you aren't getting any fluid from your diet.(and thats for a 200lb person who exercises BTW). If you are eating then its a couple litres. Does your diet community leader have medical training?

IKR Seriously. I am concerned that people are damaging themselves and sabotaging their efforts to get healthy. I was invited to a couple of those crazy water challenges.

I'm with you 100%! I have commented on peoples' journals before when they state they are trying to drink some ridiculous amount of water in the name of flushing fat. Being properly hydrated helps in all body functions, but over hydration can be deadly. You can throw your electrolytes out of balance, causing irregular heart rhythms, muscle cramping, and potentially death. As with all things related to weight loss, proper hydration is a balancing act. Your body knows what to do, that's why we feel thirst. Chris powell is one of the big voices telling people do drink half their body weight in water every day, I just blatantly disagree and frankly its a stupid recommendation on his behalf. Take into consideration what you're eating, other liquids you're drinking, how active you are, and the temperature outside. I don't think I've ever seen a case where someone could have lost more weight if they would have consumed more water, sounds pretty silly. Anyway, that sums up my rant. Good topic :) Have a good one!

I was literally JUST telling my husband that I think I'm over-hydrating...makes me go potty TOO much, probably making myself dehydrated from that!

Great Points Yolanda ,, you hit the nail right on the head . Thanks,, yes great Topic for everyone . Thanks Nic

Yeah Yolanda, totally right! Water does help with internal bodily functions, for dieting purposes though, it's more of a way to flush out excess sodium and keep your doodies moving....gotta be careful!!

I normally get up once during the night to pee, a couple times if I drink a lot of water before going to bed. I drink around a gallon a day but i don't think I'm over hydrated, haven't had any of the symptoms you mention. The highest hydration level my BIA scale has ever measured on me was about 53.5%. When I weigh first thing in the morning I'm almost always under 50%. You've got me very curious, going to do some more research into it. I have heard of people dying from drinking huge amounts of water in a short time period....happened to a young lady doing a water drinking competition sponsored by a radio station not too long ago, heard it on the news.

Everyone is different, depends on climate, activity level, weight.... there is no exact amount for everyone. My hydration level on my scale hovers around 50% too and I drink probably 3 or 4 1-1itre a day.

I've always had issues when drinking excess water. As a massage therapist I'm supposed to tell people to drink half their body weight in fl oz. So I sometimes will try to do it (for me about 70 oz).. I will maybe get to 50 oz and I have to pee every fifteen minutes (literally), feel bloated and incredibly uncomfortable. I absolutely hate drinking that much. I don't think I have ever made it anywhere close to my RDI for water. Generally I think I usually drink between 30-50oz a day, and it works for me.

I was told by my doc to try to drink 64oz of water per day. I am not crazy about water so he said it was acceptable to count decaf tea or coffee as long as you add nothing to it. That is exactly what I do and it seems to work. Activity levels are different for people. I have a sedentary activity level right now. I'm assuming if the activity level is higher your water intake should be...?

Depends on your weight and the climate as well to figure a concrete number not just your activity level.

The original work on which the admonishment to "drink 8 glasses of water a day" came from was misinterpreted and misquoted and has been widely debunked. it is a false premise. It is unfortunate that many even in the health professions, still quote that old hoax. too much water is as bad as not enough, if not worse.

I have always been told to drink 8 8oz glasses of water that is about 4 normal size water bottles. That is not a lot of water and when you add other liquids like Diet soda tea coffee then that is more water but that kind has other junk in it but it still has water. I find that I can drink the water but I drink it after my walk and when I take my fiber caps. Some days I do drink more water than that but it is when I am trying to not drink soda. I have the problem that I feel I always need something to drink sitting right next to me.

my doctor has asked me to drink 6 oz of water every hour during the (8 glasses) as part of the diet he gave, I pee all day long, but I don't drink any after 8pm, but I have always had a glass on my night stand at night, just something I have always done. Is that wrong?

Hard to comment on this topic - I drink anywhere from 10-14 cups per day. Seems good for me...I do have thirst so I listen to my body cues.

This is a good point but many people in America don't drink enough water. Soda cannot be considered water. Our bodies are made up of water so it is good to get water but anything in access is not a good thing. Thanks for sharing this.
