shiny50's Journal, 20 August 2020

I am now walking a mile 5 days a week. I get up early and walk around my neighborhood. I am developing left heel pain and swelling. Taking the day off to see if the pain improves. I alao got some inserts for my shoes. Got on the scale this morning and total weight loss is 62.6 pounds. I can physically really feel the loss. Back and knee pain much better. Will continue current WOE. Ultimate goal weight is 150. Current weight 244.4. One day at a time.

Maybe even new shoes because when we are heavier we tend to wear the shoes uneven and that also could be contributing to you pain and irritation. Keep up the great work! You’re doing amazing!

Wowsa! Keep on keepin' on. I know it seems like a oversimplified technique, but I stretch my achilles in the morning before getting out of bed, and before I go to sleep at night for two to five minutes. I lay horizontal in bed and stretch my foot so my toe is pointing toward my head. Sometimes I even lift my leg up and pull on my toe. It works almost instantly for heal pain. I do it every other day. 140 dropped! The rest is gravy.

Good shoes are so important for long term foot health when you get serious about walking or hiking or running. You want a shoe that is about 1/2 size longer than your normal shoes, and if you are going distance or hiking try to buy shoes with a wider toe box so that when your foot hits the ground your toes have space to splay out. I have shoes specifically for walking and for hiking. I’m not a runner. They are made differently to accommodate the foot stress caused by the different activities. And, stretch before you start. Even though a mile is just a short distance, if done repetitively you can have issues. Erq1 is right, switching out your shoe insoles to one that address your specific needs (over pronation for instance) is a big help.

Also, never ever wear flip flops for walking no matter how hot it is. Not worth the pain.

Might be plantar’s faciitis... I had the same problem when I began walking a lot and not good shoes... I rested a few days and invested in a pair of Gravity Defyer walking shoes... not cheap, but faciitis is gone now and am walking 12 -13 miles almost daily!

5 miles a day is amazing. Good for you. Foot pain is just the worst and I'm sure that through trial and error you will find a solution that works for you.

Thank you for your replies. I have ordered a good paid of walking shoes in a 1\2 size larger than I usually wear. Also taking off yesterday and today. I think it is Plantar Fasciitis. I have also started achilles stretching.

Do you have measured insoles? My Dr. recommend “specific” insoles about 7 years ago & they have absorb the majority of the pain.
