In January of 2016 I decided to get back to the gym and seriously get back in shape. After an exhausting workout, I got on the scale and was shocked, I knew that I was heavy but it read 247 lbs. this was the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I would get out of breath bending over trying to tie my shoes. I felt uncomfortable in my own skin. So, I decided to reduce my portion sizes and reduce the number of carbs and fat I took in. I took the gym seriously and got after it. By July of 2017 I was at 195 Lbs. and did the best PT test to date. I felt amazing. My wife and I had fully embraced this healthy fit lifestyle. What I didn’t know was that my pancreas was failing. I started getting tired and not feeling well but I attributed it to just getting older and stress at work. I kept losing weight and being more run down. December 6th, I went home from work not feeling well and getting sick in the restroom. I started having involuntary muscle spasms down my left side. The morning of the 7th my left arm was uncontrollable – I couldn’t keep it from moving and I was really scared. My wife and I went to the ER (she was amazing that day) and I presented with my “little problem”. The result was that my blood glucose level was at 1280; the tester in the ER could not even register it. I had a little time in the ICU to get my things in order as it was bad. I am blessed to have a great Doc and team of nurses that kept me alive and got me stable. I am a brand-new type 1 diabetic - learning how to better manage my diet. committed to kicking this diseases ass. My diet was not too far off from where it is now other than counting the carbs. I am on this site to track my food as this is critical for me to manage my BGL and to help me get ok with this new journey. I am ok most days with the whole affair and all it entails. Some days not so much. My wife is amazing in her support and tolerance of this endeavor.

im ready
Hi - making a decision to take action is a good start on this journey. I am really new to Diabetes (29 days post ICU) and am a novice for sure. what has helped me so far is to be diligent in my food intake - I measure and calculate everything. I also met with a nutritionist to help me establish the right carb and calorie levels for me and my level of activity. I also have become a student of this disease - I am reading all the articles I can find on the subject to be better informed. getting back to the gym was a big plus for me and helps with the recovery. I really wish you the best in achieving your goals.
