muscle gain
When my wife spends a hot day in her garden, she gains at least three pounds no matter what she eats. Inflammation is the body's way of dealing with physical stress. The only way to get rid of the water is to keep exercising until your body is used to it or stop and wait to pee it all out.

Great article! I've been shooting for that 1:1 and it can be difficult. I have to eat 3-4 eggs for breakfast, have two protein shakes, chicken after working out and a good amount of meat with dinner. I will say it helps with not having the appetite to eat a bunch of other food though!

Fasting
Autophagy. That's why.
I did seven days last year and lost almost 20 lbs., about 16 of which stayed off. As an added benefit, my skin and eyesight improved greatly.

Weight loss
What you eat (and when) depends on what you do. I recommend getting your protein and fat intake fairly consistent. This way, you can focus on how many grams of carbs you need to be under/over your daily intake, then cycle four or five days of low carb with two to three days of higher carb. Vegetables come first, then higher quality carbs, and don't forget to treat yourself occasionally. I eat two fried eggs with a single piece of buttered Ezekiel bread and 3 ounces of OJ every single morning. I take two protein shakes made with Optimum Nutrition Natural (chocolate) mixed in water, instant coffee, and a tablespoon of heavy cream. I take a raw bell pepper, carrots, pistachios, and a small amount of raisins as snacks, and drink coffee at work with one tablespoon of heavy cream and half a tablespoon of honey. The shakes are for before and after my lunch-time workout.
That gets me through to dinner where I cycle most of my calories. Four nights a week, I eat meat and vegetables only and the other nights I have carbs. My favorite is taco night. I call them my magical weight loss tacos. After most of two days at low calories, they seem to be just the thing to tell my body it's okay to release the fat.
