Maelyn gazed up at the full moon as the little black feline chased off after a mouse in the storage shed nearby. The moon was the color of cheddar cheese; gosh, it had been a long time since she had that item, cheddar cheese. There was a ring around it caused by the humidity. Summer had come and with it the hopes of crops of tomatoes and other plants to be harvested in a couple of months, and hay for the animals. It had been raining so much that the hay hadn't had time to dry, and each day it lost nourishment needed for the livestock. However, it seemed that there was a break in the weather, unfortunately, it also meant a return of heat for summer coming around the corner.

The first run of the week wasn't very exciting. However, seeing the thing that Rajit could do with his toe, that, she could have lived the rest of her life and been completely content to not eve have seen. He pushed to find out if she had read any of his novel, reminding her quite strongly that he was in charge of hot showers, but with this heat, who wants a hot shower anyways?

It was the run today that tore at her heart. Sam, such a good guy, the radio operator. Alice, the old runner she was taking the place of, the one that had chased her from the hospital to Abel township on her first day actually, just as one of those undead, had been shot a short distance from Abel. Sam and her seemed to have been quite close. His heart is obviously aching as he took off today during the last run drill to find her wallet. Pictures of her sister and other momentos of a life lost.

It is interesting. These things, trinkets, we leave behind us. For those that we leave behind in our absence it is these things that give them a piece of us to live on. A piece of a memory to smile at and go, "Oh, yeah, I remember this. It was that time we climbed out on the roof and nearly slipped off into a pile hog slop." The things that make us smile, cry, laugh, and wail with gnashing of teeth rending our clothes. Bits and pieces of our own humanity left behind to finally fade out when the last living person that understands the puzzle pieces of our lives joins us in the here beyond.

Where we last left our hero....

Maelyn, a cleric by choice, wandered around the yard of the Abel township. It had been an interesting first week of training. This place was far different than the town and inn that she had come from. She was having to learn whole new eating patterns and activity levels. Let's face it, a chubby healer, may work out just fine in Trita, but here, in this place, being out of shape can get you, and others killed. They had a doctor, their term for a healer, and needed someone who could get things for them, a runner as they are called. The world was different. Technology was simultaneously advanced and thrown backwards from what she knew.

The last run of this week though. That had been a bugger. She ended up doing her first chore for the place and was chased by what they call a shambler, a slow moving, dead person intent on eating her flesh to turn her into a slow moving dead person intent on eating someone else's flesh to turn them into a slow moving dead person...well, you get the point. It gave her great gusto to do something she had not done since a teenager. Forget the piddly little drills of only running for a few seconds. She ran for 10 minutes straight, and kept going, nearly crashing into the gate as it was opened to let her in.

Despite her fear of the thing chasing her, part of her felt remorse for it. It had once been a human like her. At least that's what she was given to understand; that all of these things were once human, no elves, dwarves, or others in this part of the world, just humans. She even winced at the ricocheting sound of the bullet taking its head clean off.

Well, that was yesterday. Today she rested, and tried to go through Rajit's novel that he had written in hopes of curting favor for another hot shower. As the doc requested she had been keeping a log of her food and had stayed within her limits. The scale even saw some movement down, and the walks around the encampment weren't as rough. Of course, she hadn't had any meeting with the screaming lady this week focusing on building strength in other ways.

Tomorrow is another training day. Another day to get stronger, faster, leaner, and more prepared to do her duty for the township.
