5'9" tall, 61 years old, widow, still working. Eating what the UK government considers a balanced diet leaves me depressed, lethargic and expanding like my namesake attached to a gas canister. So let the Health Minister indulge in pulses, whole grains, bread, and pasta (and may an unclean Yak sit on his dinner). I'm going back to Atkins, playing football with the dog, and with your help,my fellow Banters, getting back into clothes not designed by Omar the Tentmaker...

Thanks for your responses and encouragement.

Interesting to see that wds and paige e have also noted pain reduction. I must do some research on food allergies and pain.

I wonder if wds has had her thyroid levels checked? Fybromyalgia and thyroid deficiency appear sometimes to be linked.

I had best leave out trying your suggestion until I have another 50lbs offSmile

What interested me was that my arthritis is less painful and so I am able to exercise more. After yesterday's marathon walk (19km - I got lost in the forest)I should be screaming as I step out of bed. Instead I put in another 5km today before an ankle joint started shouting. I shall have to take a dose of anti-inflamatory to get back on the road tomorrow but the pain levels are much lower than they have been for months. Since osteo-arthritis is basically your immune system misbehaving I wondered if food groups to which one was sensitive could set it off? If so that could explain the improvement?

Is it possible that feeling really well on Atkins indicates that one was sensitive to one of the foods one has dropped? Lactose? Gluten? Yeast? I am finding that each day I have more energy and despite increasing exercise greatly I am aching less not more than when I was eating the supposedly healthy government promoted diet which is high in carbs.

What are your top 5 motivators for losing this weight that you can't do at your current weight?[/
1) To have my feet, knees and hips stop sending rude messages to my brain.
2) To look down the bath and see only water not tum.
3) To be able to throw out all those clothers which seem as wide as they are long.
4) Not to have to hope that the news man has a wide angle lens when filming me at work.
5) To be alive to teach my grandchildren to ride once my daughter understands the hints I keep dropping.

Any suggestions?
I add chopped walnuts to salad. You only need a tablespoonful chopped which, according to Atkins counter is 1.1g of carb. According to back of packet its 3.7g per 100g of nuts. Crunchy and supposed to be good for the brain too..
