I have had indicators of PCOS since puberty, which was several decades ago. I have gained weight steadily ever since. In a recent Dr visit, an ultrasound showed my ovaries enlarged - and that, along with the fact that I have every-single-symptom (significant weight gain, male pattern weight gain, thinning hair, acne, skin tags, hirsutism, infertility - I know, sexy) of PCOS made me realize that I didn't just suspect I had it, but I actually have it and it needs to be managed.

Not everyone's body is the same. People handle foods differently. It is very discouraging for people to just tell you to eat less and move more - when that repeatedly fails. I read an article that described women with PCOS as having significantly fewer receptors for insulin at the cellular level than typical individuals. That means every carb I eat will most likely end up as fat, whereas in a typical person it would be burned for energy.

So I am trying medication and significant changes in my diet. I read that 90-95% of people who lose significant amounts of weight put it right back on, with additional weight gain. That made me want to stand in front of a bus. It said the main indicator for success was slow weight loss. 1-2 pounds a week. That's painstaking.

It's hard to stay motivated at a pound per week. But I want to be attractive for my new husband. I want to avoid becoming diabetic. I want to be healthy for my daughter, and for me. I want this to be long term.

All I really want is for my weight and my dress size to start with 1.

PCOS
I have had PCOS for...forever. 30 years. I knew it, although it was not until recently firmly diagnosed. I have every symptom. Although I have been heavy since puberty, my weight had recently gotten out of control. I am 46, and my metabolism has reached all-time lows.
Over this past summer I read an article about PCOS and the effect on weight. It said that those of us with PCOS have significantly fewer receptors for insulin at the cellular level. Something like 5000, when typical people have 120,000. I knew I ate more than i should, but i also knew I was way fatter than other people who ate the same or less than I did. This article was sort of an epiphany for me. I have a physical difference. It isn't going to go away because 'it's not fair', and it isn't going to change without something significant being done. One of those is to consider medication. So I talked to my Dr. and I went on Metofrmin. The other is to change the way I eat. Not go on a 'diet', but change my approach to the types of food I ingest. So I cut out the majority of processed carbs. I don't go crazy....no ketosis. I don't want to lose weight fast, because then it comes right back on. I don't eat bread...unless it's no sugar low calorie (8 grams of carbs per piece). I try to avoid refined sugar - no sweets (damn you Halloween), no pasta, corn or potatoes. That's pretty much it. I don't worry too much about vegetables, other than potatoes and corn. I eat limited beans. I do avoid most fruit, although I eat some every now and then because I want my vitamins through food and not pills.
I'm not perfect with this approach. I cheat a little periodically because this is for the long haul and I have to be able to live with it. I need to avoid diabetes. I have lost 27 pounds since August and I feel like that's about the right speed for me, with a lifestyle change. It is 10% of my weight.
I am hopeful.
You have to be ready to make the choice about your health. But when you are ready...I know you can do it.

Trying this again for the 100th time.
Find what works for YOUR body. Don't go too fast - slow weight loss lasts better. You really can do this.
