I don't want to be a type 2 diabetic any longer - not for one more day. The thought of having to spend the rest of my life, day in and day out, carrying that damn blood sugar monitoring kit with me AND the metformin and glipizide drives me to distraction.

At my most recent office visit in March 2012, I weighed 305 pounds and the doctor changed my dosage of metformin. I was up to 1,000 mg of metformin in the morning and evening. The glipizide dose was the same, though, 5 mg with each metformin dose.

I'm low thyroid and the blood test done in March showed that the dose for that medication also needed to be increased.

All was well at the follow up to check the thyroid levels. I hadn't lost a pound and it was June.

I made my final decision on October 20, 2012. I was 290 pounds. I had lost weight, but at an agonizingly slow pace. This was it, time to make a change.

As a gift for myself I bought an iPad and found an app by an insulin manufacturer that helps me track my food, blood sugars, and activity. It has helped me tremendously and has taken away 95% of my urge to binge (it's that 5% that gets ya!). I made a deal with myself that I must be honest with the app and with myself - if I binged, I would have to record every morsel. When I look at the graph that tracks my calories per day and see how the intake doubled on those binge days, I am embarrassed. More about the spiritual aspects of binging (for me, anyway) in another entry.

As my weight has dropped, I notice that I am able to decrease the amount of metformin I'm taking. When I take the full 1,000 mg, my sugars drop dangerously low and I find myself eating glucose tablets to get the levels to normal levels. Down to 500 mg of metformin on most days. Soon enough, with my doctor's approval, I'll be off the metformin and glipizide for good.

(I want to be free of the lisinopril, also. Hopefully this will happen as I lose more weight.)
