13 July 2017

I started off the week with focus and maintained the right diet (even though I could hardly walk as I'd cut my foot on the Sunday). I kept eating well until the weekend, when we went away and the old problem reared its head- how to eat keto when away from home. I started by making keto quiches to eat in the car Friday night and packed other snacks for the weekend. I'd also packed a nut mix for breakfast. So far, so good. If I hadn't got sick, all would have gone well. I had to take a Panadiene for a headache and that's when I discovered that keto breakfasts, while you feel full, don't actually absorb medications on the stomach. So next I had crippling stomach pains, and on the 5 hour train, the best my husband could find to put bulk on my stomach was potato chips. Yuk. They were a nasty Malaysian brand too. Having blown my carbs, I decided I might as well eat carbs for lunch too, though out want a dreadful lunch and I don't think it did much harm as I the it all up an hour or two later when the headache set in for real. The rest of the day was a write - off and I didn't eat tool the next day. I'm proud to say, I had a pretty good brunch- easy, because when I don't feel well, I tend to prefer simple food, vegies etc. A shame they gave us a complimentary piece of cake, which I had to eat of course, but then I didn't eat much else for the day, only when I had to top up my Panadiene. Monday morning my weight was way down- no surprise. Still not much appetite and I ended up in hospital for 3 days for tests, and Malaysian hospitals don't go out of their way to look after you. Didn't get any lunch Monday and the measly little hospital meals (no doubt calorie -controlled for a 50kg Asian body) meant that even though I had my husband bring up a few chocolate and cheese treats and was barely moving while imprisoned there, I maintained the weight loss for the weekend.
I hope this week I can continue with weight loss without being sick, by maintaining a healthy diet! I'm actually finding out hard to start and maintain the weight loss regardless of how religiously I stick to my eating plan or what eating plan I follow, so let's see how it goes.

2 days back on proper ketogenic diet (100% faithful, tracking everything, which is the only way to do a ketogenic diet) and I have already lost 1.3kg!

I've committed to myself to stick 100% to the ketogenic diet until I go away on 18th December. While I'm away, I will just endeavour to eat as healthily as I can, and when I get home again, I'll see if I'm up to all the cooking of a keto diet again. I think it's the only way I'm ever going to get back below 80kg and anywhere near my goal of low 70's.

I'm going to try avoiding maltitol and most other sugar alcohols except erythritol, to see if it helps ketosis. I've had good initial results the previous times I've gone on the keto diet, but tended to plateau after 3 or 4 weeks and never gained ketosis, so avoiding processed artificially foods is my plan. I'm finding I'm not at all hungry between meals and the food has been satisfying and pleasant. I'll need to increase my repertoire, though, to avoid the boredom of repetitive foods and getting overwhelmed with food preparation that has cause problems the last few times we've done keto.

I've only had one day in the last 3-4 weeks where I deliberately ate things I knew I shouldn't- of course, it was after yet another weekly weigh-in with disappointing results (I'd put on a little weight, and am essentially the same weight I was 4 weeks ago).

Apart from that, I've been eating more carbs but keeping my servings small, but the real clincher, I think, is that we've eaten out nearly every night for a fortnight.Even though I've mostly been choosing the better options, there are times I haven't, and instead of picking off batter/ leaving the potatoes, I've been eating them.

The result is, I just bought a book about the low carb/ high fat diet (with recipes) and I'm convinced I need to get back into it. I have had some good results with it, at times. I also need to find a dietician who can help me stick to it. So today I have started tracking again, and will aim for ketosis. Let's see if I can actually register a decent level of ketones- I never have before! I'm keeping away from a lot of the sugar alcohols and only using erythritol and nutrasweet for sweeteners, so that might help. Anyway, it should help me lose a few kg before my trip to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan at Christmas (when I can put it all back on again!).
