It has been a while since I logged anything due to work, practicum and exams and trying to keep up with my exercise schedule. I chose to do exercise that is fun for me and learning something new so I am dancing and doing yoga. I know there is a myth that all African Americans can dance but I have never had rhythm so I am starting with Line dancing ... the old basic Electric slide and it is so much fun. My daughter does it with me so she can laugh because she is an excellent dancer. We work up a good heart rate and have fun in the process. I am down 4 more lbs. So I am patting myself on the back a little for sticking with the program. My goal for the month of April is to be better at tracking my meals and journaling. This is very therapeutic for me and I hope some of the information is helpful to someone else. I will write again very soon ... until them pray without ceasing for yourself and others .....

Today I am 17 days post-op and feeling better and better each day. As promised I am going to talk a little about my surgical decision and my year long journey to actually having the surgery. I went to the doctor for my annual blood work as I have hypertension, high cholesterol, anxiety and depression, GERD, stomach ulcers and Lactose intolerance. During this visit two things happen that made me re-think the way I have been living my life. 1st the nursed weighed me and I was over the 200lb mark in fact I weighed in at 206.6 I am 5'3" tall with a small body frame. This was my heaviest weight. The Pièce de résistance of this medical session was that I found out that I am borderline Diabetic. I went home feeling like I had been hit in the head with a heavy dose of reality. My thoughts were that if I don’t get this lifelong weight struggle under control I am not going to be around to boss my family around much longer. My next thought was that I need to exercise more. I have lost weight many times over the years but always managed to gain it back more quickly than I lost it and always with a few more pounds than before. So after talking with my daughter we decided that the P-90X would be a great way to start. So I purchased the box set with everything in it and was super excited when UPS delivered it. For about two solid weeks we diligently followed Tony Horton and his host of guest workout friends. I was in school working on my Law Degree at the time and the 45min workouts were eating into my study time. Needless to say that fell by the waist side after about 3 and 1/2 weeks. My next step was to join the Gym but I had to be very picky, I wanted a gym with a hot tub, steam room and a pool that was open 24 hours so I could go whenever I wish. I found one that was a 30 min drive from my home. For the next 3 months my son, my nephew, my daughter and I diligently went to the gym every other day. I loved every min of working out but again my studies were suffering and after each work out we would stop at the grocery store and by healthy meals but would eat them late at night after a night of working out sitting in the steam room and the hot tub. School and family obligations started to require me to miss workouts and soon a month then two months had passed and I had not been to the gym. I was sitting at work one day and I looked at my trash can next to my desk and notice soda cans, potato chip bags and the little cereal boxes. I look at the clock it was 11 am and I had not had lunch yet. That was the day I vowed that change was going to come.. Permanent change was going to come ….
Stay tuned for the continuation

I had my one week check up with my doctor and all is well :-) Incisions are healing beautifully. I started this journey weighing 206.6 lbs today I weighed in at 194.4 which is a 12 lb loss and mile stone. Crossing the 200 lbs threshold eluded me for so long. I have learned through this journey that weight loss is not just about counting calories and exercising daily although those are the main ingredients to success, when one has YoYo dieted their body into a permanent state of starvation mode you may need extra help that others do not. Medical issues can change the dynamic of your ability to shed pounds or gain muscle mass. We are all different and there is on "one size fit all" way to lose weight. It took me a long time to learn this lesson. I demeaned my self for not being able to lose the weight instead of doing the homework that I have completed on this, my final journey. I am proud of myself that I did not give up or give in instead I got busy researching getting professional medical advice and information then finally making an informed decision. Please look for my next entry where I will provide my step by step process to this decision. In the mean time drop me a line, ask my any question and I will give you my best answer or direct you to resources that can answer your questions. Until next time
