Today I am 17 days post-op and feeling better and better each day. As promised I am going to talk a little about my surgical decision and my year long journey to actually having the surgery. I went to the doctor for my annual blood work as I have hypertension, high cholesterol, anxiety and depression, GERD, stomach ulcers and Lactose intolerance. During this visit two things happen that made me re-think the way I have been living my life. 1st the nursed weighed me and I was over the 200lb mark in fact I weighed in at 206.6 I am 5'3" tall with a small body frame. This was my heaviest weight. The Pièce de résistance of this medical session was that I found out that I am borderline Diabetic. I went home feeling like I had been hit in the head with a heavy dose of reality. My thoughts were that if I don’t get this lifelong weight struggle under control I am not going to be around to boss my family around much longer. My next thought was that I need to exercise more. I have lost weight many times over the years but always managed to gain it back more quickly than I lost it and always with a few more pounds than before. So after talking with my daughter we decided that the P-90X would be a great way to start. So I purchased the box set with everything in it and was super excited when UPS delivered it. For about two solid weeks we diligently followed Tony Horton and his host of guest workout friends. I was in school working on my Law Degree at the time and the 45min workouts were eating into my study time. Needless to say that fell by the waist side after about 3 and 1/2 weeks. My next step was to join the Gym but I had to be very picky, I wanted a gym with a hot tub, steam room and a pool that was open 24 hours so I could go whenever I wish. I found one that was a 30 min drive from my home. For the next 3 months my son, my nephew, my daughter and I diligently went to the gym every other day. I loved every min of working out but again my studies were suffering and after each work out we would stop at the grocery store and by healthy meals but would eat them late at night after a night of working out sitting in the steam room and the hot tub. School and family obligations started to require me to miss workouts and soon a month then two months had passed and I had not been to the gym. I was sitting at work one day and I looked at my trash can next to my desk and notice soda cans, potato chip bags and the little cereal boxes. I look at the clock it was 11 am and I had not had lunch yet. That was the day I vowed that change was going to come.. Permanent change was going to come ….
Stay tuned for the continuation

I can't wait to hear more! Working and going to school are enough reasons to defer exercise. I was challenged to continue exercising when I worked 3/4 time and had child-rearing obligations, but was done with school. I was able to not work while going to nursing school, but I paid for it later. I work 1/2 time now (after a back injury as a nurse) and my children are older/grown. So, I feel like I am at a good place to stick to this lifestyle change. I struggle with high cholesterol, GERD and borderline high fasting glucose as well. My blood pressure is OK, but not as good as it used to be. I have my next physical in June and I hope to see some improvement in my lab results. My heartburn is somewhat better and I no longer get the strange "tight" feeling in my upper chest when laying at a slight incline (as if to watch t.v. in bed). Good luck to you on your health journey!

Looking forward to seeing your journey posted here, and wishing you all the best !!!! A good part of the battle is the mental decision you can do this !!!

It's amazing what small things can lead to the decision to have surgery. I had been wanting to do this for sooooo long. I just got sick & tired of being unable to lose weight. I'd join the gym but then have to stop going because I would hurt my knee or ankle or shoulder. Once you get out of that habit of going, it's hard to get back into it again!! Things just worked out that I was able to afford to have it done this past year. I'm only four months out now. I haven't lost as much as I thought I would by this time, but I am glad to have lost as much as I have!!
