Anthony Bourdain took his own life last night. This is heartbreaking for me.
Being part of the professional culinary community, I loved this man. An outstanding sense of humor, a lightning quick, open mind, direct and unpretentious, a warm and generous heart, a gifted chef.
In Paris with his best friend, Eric Ripert, chef/owner of Le Bernardin-NYC, filming an episode of his CNN series, "Parts Unknown". Eric found him in his hotel room in the morning unresponsive. I don't understand suicide. The pain must be excruciating. I have always felt that nothing can ever be that bad, but with the number of people is such despair up almost 30% since 2000, there is something very wrong here.
It makes me very sad to see a man who was a line cook until he was 44 write the FUNNIEST, most honest book about our industry and open up his life to success and celebrity but not get the psychiatric help he so obviously needed. It's nothing to be ashamed of. I'll never understand this. It's an enormous loss.

Sylvia’s makes the BEST Fried Chicken coating I have ever used. Easy and delicious. Light and crispy. Perfect with just a salad with my Sweet Tomato Salad Dressing.
