Weight loss has slowed / stopped — is there such a thing as too *few* calories?

I was eating about 1500-1600 calories per day, and losing about half a pound a day. I didn't see enough weight loss recently, so I dropped down to a little over 1200 calories.

Today, I weighed .2 pounds MORE than I did two days ago.

I don't think I can eat any less per day. My energy levels are low and making it hard to focus / work as it is.

Any ideas?

Yes you can have too few calories. Recommended minimum for women is 1200 and men is 1600. Low energy can mean too few calories. Have you tired using a few other RDI calculators to find out what you burn a day? You would then subtract 500 to 1000 from it. It may take a little for your body to catch up. You can do it.

That's good to know, thanks! I'm 233+ pounds right now, and was even going below 1200 calories a day sometimes. Probably taking it too far. I tried a few RDI calculators at your suggestion, and come up around 2400 as my maintain weight level. I'll go back to 1600 calories for a while and see how it does.

half pound a day sounds excellent to me, when I eat three meals a day with 1200- 1500 calories I normally lose one pound a week ,please try to not go under 1200 and keep going you will have to lose weight

I am having the same problem. Sometimes eating less than 1000 cal a day and gaining weight! Stick to 1200 to 1400 I think you will be fine.

Weight loss slows as your metabolism weakens (This sounds bad but it's true, it takes more energy to power a 250 pound person then say a hundred, so as you lose weight your body adjusts. It's normal) I read that when you go under a certain amount of calories your body goes into starvation mode and releases stored fat and stores more fat in the food you consume as a protective response to it thinking it's starving. It's normal to have a lull after a period, I think that you should consult your calculated RDI and go under that but not too far. Under 1200 is probably not enough to be healthy, so maybe just stick with that and see how it goes. Hope this helps. (:
