Byrdface's Journal, 28 April 2010

My employer is holding a "Largest Loser" challenge, company wide and I signed up. On my way out the door, my co worker stopped me and said "You aren't doing this, are you?" I said I was as she said "Don't you fall under the 'if you are a size 2, this program isn't for you' category?" I said no I do not, and while I should have been flattered, I felt slightly insulted. Just 2 lbs ago, my BMI showed that I was overweight. I do have almost 20 lbs to lose and I think this would be a great way to motivate and get some useful pointers. The more I think about it, though, I think it is all about perspective. My coworker is bigger than I am, so to her, I look skinny (or skinnier), however to someone who ways less than I do, I likely appear overweight. What I mean is, we tend to hold ourselves as the norm, so when someone looks different than you do, then they are skinny or they are fat. We all need to motivate and support eachother to reach our goals, regaurdless of how we view them and not make them feel badly because your oppinion may be different. This, of course is null and void if someone has an eating disorder or is medically under weight, but in general, I think this is a good rule of thumb.

We are in the SAME boat!! I tend to talk about my diet quite often (it helps keep me motivated) & some of my larger friends actually get offended! Just because we don't need a fork lift to help us get out of bed doesn't mean we don't need to work on our figure!!!! I think perspective has sooo much to do with it! I have noticed when I'm around very skinny people I feel really large!!

That is exactly it!I guess we all feel as good as the people we surround ourselves with! LOL! I know I have weight to lose, but I am not HUGE. I am happy to hear there are others who understand. Thanks!

Girl, you are speaking my language. People are constantly telling me not to lose more weight! It drives me nuts! I'm 5'8 and JUST got under the obese range on that chart and they're still like "you're thin enough, you can stop now". And this is usually coming from thin people! I understand they are just trying to be nice, but come on. It's none of anyone's business. I'm clearly nowhere near underweight. I have a thin friend at work who is trying to lose 10 pounds and I support her 100%. It's YOUR body and YOU alone know what's going to make you feel best. Everyone else needs to step aside!
