Callys mum's Journal, 23 October 2015

Well after two months of slogging over paid work, turfed out on me arse and to rub me nose in it ... I have to confess on FS that I've slipped off the scales. Life is tough sometimes. Thankfully I am surrounded by people who love and support me. Plus, the All Blacks are still in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

A not so close friend, but a beautiful soul lost her life to cancer two weeks ago. As this is the UK and I am in a reflective mood, I am doffing my head to her spirit, her passion and her attitude to life. Next week we get to celebrate her brief life with her two young sons and her bereaved husband.

I noticed that she had visibly faded from the social scene but her family were ever present at all the club events. I trained rugby with her, despite her being told that any trauma to her head would end her life. She plied her hand at coaching and was a passionate supporter of women's rugby. Needless to say, the first attempt at a team failed due to a lack of numbers. Undaunted, she cobbled together a team of very young but enthusiastic under 16yr olds. Cheers Claire, you are missed.

I've been struggling with sciatica for the past month. It's a battle I am not winning. Have succumbed to nerve blocking medication. Strangely the only relief I am experiencing has come from cycling. Nanna cycling but it takes my mind off the biting in my left buttock and the tightening along my left outside shin.

On the positive, I've pulled down the old green house, put up garden tool box and cleared out all the old plants so the patio looks amazing. I will be attempting green tomato chutney in the next few days. Will update next month on my progress.

Enjoy the weekend people.

with regard to your sciatica, have you had your back checked out? A lot of sciatica is caused by a problem in the Lumba vertebrea and the pain travels to the nerve cluster, picked up by the sciatic nerve. A lot of time depending on how far down the leg the pain travels is an indicator as to which of the lumba vertebrea has the problem. I don't man to soun as if I am teaching my granny to suck eggs, have you tried "McKenezie" stretches, very good for siatica, also sleep on the bad side, piller or towel between your knees and your knees curled up towards your chest.

Also, the exercises I do when I have a touch of sciatica are the yoga stretches - fish and cobra, but you should check with a physiotherapist first.

Thanks dog147 for your very good advice. Done all of the above except going to 'Doctor Death', my ever reliable physio practioner but as now two weeks gone, pain shifting all around legs hips, so I'm guessing there's arthritis in the mix as well. I'll persist with sleeping on my bad side with a pillow as its the only position that gives enough relief for me to drop off to sleep.
