I'm switching to Atkins.

I tried even 2100 calories a day, and while it was much more doable than the 1400-1600 that I had been doing before, I found by fatsecret's awesome counters that when I eat comfortably I normally eat about 3500 calories a day. No wonder I gain weight so easily!! Friends on Atkins and my dietitian friend say that Atkins does actually curb cravings, so after careful consideration I'm committing to Atkins.

Commitment
My dietitian friend told me that people do successfully lose weight on Atkins, but that most people don't follow up with the just-as-important last phases of the plan. She says that if I don't stick with those, I will gain any weight lost back with a vengeance. So I realize that I can't enter into this plan unless I'm entering in pretty much for good.

Counting the Cost
I love ice-cream, frosting, mashed potatoes, chips, pancakes, the whole lot. Saying goodbye to carbs is a difficult decision. I enter into it only after failing for years on diets due to hunger and cravings, and after spending a month eating freely - I gained seven pounds. Seven pounds a month is 84 pounds a year, and I am certainly capable of doing it. Obesity runs in my family, and thankfully I've been duly warned, so after 10 years of fighting it I'm 184lbs. Not great, but better than the 300lbs+. I could easily be. So the cost of Atkins is worth a healthy body for me.

Ignoring Advice
My friend also told me that I should be doing this in the care of a doctor and taking occasional blood work. With three kids, a move coming up, and work, I couldn't be bothered to go to a doctor. But I'm taking the supplements she's instructed me to take: Multivitamin, Calcium, Magnesium, and Atkins recommends Omega3. I do happen to have a physical coming up in a month anyway, so I guess if something's going wrong, we'll catch it then :)

Always the Challenge
Exercise. When am I going to do it? It's a must. The danger of Atkins is that it turns your body upon itself. That means burning fat, but also can mean burning muscle as well. So I neeeeeed to find time to exercise!!

Lord, I hope that you have brought me this knowledge in answer to my prayers for help. Please have mercy on me and my limitations and I pray that you would protect my health. I also pray for others on this journey with me, for friends and relatives who face challenges along the lines of the health detriments connected with obesity. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
