Katsolo's Journal, 06 December 2020

1/30 swims started 5 December. Decided to start another challenge yesterday. Got an email with a "30 swim in 30 days" from a friend and it's cold and I'm an idiot, so why not? I'm a week behind the others but I'll just double-up or go into 2021. I always enjoy the absurdity of swimming on the last day of December and the first day of the New Year and this year I think it's even more meaningful. Nothing set in stone on time or distance, just get your butt in the pool. So away we go. I did have to take a second shower after because I was shivering so hard, but I'll get used to it. That said, it was beautiful. I started decorating both the front and the back of the house a couple of years ago when I was working horrible hours and not leaving the house a lot. It's nothing fancy, but I enjoy the lights from my office. My neighbor has started decorating their balcony rail in back for the same reason. it's a new trend.

Not giving up the walks, I still have three overly dramatic large dogs. Yesterday's adventure was going to the car wash before it's shut down again. Oh yeah, they've implemented a shut down along with the curfew effective tonight. I am so very glad I bought the chest freezer and stocked up before it became a thing. that's where I'm keeping all the extra toilet paper!!! j/k.

So finally, numbers on the swim. non-stop, thought about doing a solid hour, but I was cold. Turned up the heat in the pool before I got out, so it should be better next time. I had it on super saver mode which basically lets it fall to a lowest temperature before heating and it was c-o-l-d. Mixed bag on this one at 844 strokes which is really good with the big paddles on, average heart rate was pretty low for the number of strokes at 129, which is cool. Looks like it's time to turn up the current a notch. 10.3 METs. Actually I wonder if that's part of being cold? Guess we'll be finding out over the next 29 days.

Edit: Hmm, cold water swimming's a thing: https://welldoing.org/article/benefits-cold-water-swimming The frugalist in me is probably going to endorse this.

Last night should have been our winter Walkabout in the neighborhood. I texted with friends, I think we're going to organize a less formal "walk around" to look at lights and pick up food from our favorite restaurants since they can only do curbside going forward.
