Katsolo's Journal, 27 September 2020

Finally swam last night, still ten clicks lower than "normal" but it was a pretty nice swim, no interruptions, no pain, can't really complain and I know I've got more in me. 823 strokes, 10.4 METs, average heart rate in upper 130s. Watch says 11 minutes in warm up, 19 in cardio, so I went and looked at the actual log. Held the lower heart rate for a good bit, then must have changed things up somehow, maybe harder pulls. Interesting anyways.

Steps yesterday have to be off. Went to the beach with the dogs, ran them up and down the shore, then went to Costco and it's saying 2.5 miles for the day with 6.5K steps. That's not right, should be at least 3, but who knows, could be running back and forth in place confused it. Not gonna sweat it.

Told dogs when we got to the beach that they needed to promise to stay out of the water. Yeah, like that happened. Three wet dogs within five minutes. Strategy was to go down the beach where they couldn't hear me and forget about the water. Big dude is limping at little this morning, will watch him and keep him relatively still for a couple of days. Also will check in with vet. We met horses up close for the first time with no fence. My little red one is fearless and considered leaving me for a larger pack. Shepherds do what shepherds so, act with caution and tell everyone around them by barking incessantly. both.of.them. No pics up close because I needed to hold the big dogs. All in all a good day and I'm so glad I live here even though it makes me nuts sometimes.

Back is better. Still can't lift heavy things, that's fine. I'll make do. Pretty good sleep once I used the TENS and took an ibuprofen in the middle of the night. Not sure if it was the throwing, the swimming or both. It does feel good to be more active overall. Ended up ditching the towel around my waist in the middle of the night.

Pics as promised. It was good to feel more normal again. Enjoy the day!

Thanks for the pictures. Where were they taken. Keep up the great progress. The scale is not the only register of success. Stay safe.

This is at Fiesta Island, which is normally much less crowded after Labor Day, but this whole year... SMH, nothing is normal. They're in the process of changing it (not happy, but life goes on), but the whole island has been leash free for years. It's great because dogs can run free and really have nowhere to go if you don't have good recall. City is rezoning it for more recreational use by humans and improvements like restrooms which will make it a destination and useless for me. Progress. Chris, I have an Apple Watch. It's usually pretty consistent, meaning it may not be accurate, but it is consistent which allows me to monitor a baseline. I do know that I can change up my exertion by changing how I swim, think lifeguard stroke vs. long course vs. sprint. I was finding my way in the water yesterday after pretty much three weeks of non-swimming, so was just interesting to look at results. I turned the current way down last week, I haven't turned it back up yet which means I'm not swimming against rapids because I don't want my body bouncing around too much until I know I'm healed and can take it.

I learned how to drive an 18-wheeler on Fiesta Island! Also have had more than one disasterous date involving campfires and the wrong guys, but can laugh about it now with fond memories 😉. Great, flat beach area for any kind of exercise.

yup, concur on the accuracy, it is what it is but they are getting better and I like mapping my routes, etc. I needed waterproof for the pool and mine has a cell phone built in so I can leave without my phone and have the inevitable emergency. I am that person that can leave my phone at the house and walk away. I do like the ability to do voice commands in the car these days. keeps me out of trouble with the law. 😳 the thing with some of the off brands is that you do have some cyber vulnerabilities similar to tiktok and some IoT issues, so I just can't go there.

justbananas, I really love that open space as it is, sad that it's going to be improved soon. I'm sure we'll be limited to fire rings and whatnot. hoping the city figures out that a budget deficit means you can't have everything you want all at once and it gets delayed another 20-30 years like the undergrounding of power lines.

So glad you’re healing Kat. Really made me happy to read this. I know injuries. Glad yours is almost behind you. As for shepherds, my word, our neighbor just got a puppy size. The barking!! 😩😩😩😩😩😩 I want to move. Please tell me it stops when they’re toddlers? Like potty training? Yes?!

It should stop, wifey, but they need to be training the dog. Nine weeks old is when they start here.

Seems the lady knows what she’s doing. I over hear some intense training. So here’s to hoping ‘no bark’ is part of it. She’s a gorgeous puppy. And nice people (new). But a few other neighbors are complaining amongst themselves as well. There’s other dogs but they rarely bark. But they are not puppies. So I’m patient. Here’s to a quieter future. 😂😂

you can always get an "egg" type device for when they leave the house, but you have to use it correctly. basically, if the dog barks, you push the button. did this with my ex-neighbors' unsocialized dogs who were the absolute worst when they weren't home and locked outside 24/7.

I had a cheap $30 tracking watch. I found out it was off some but I could just add 300 kcal to it to make it where I needed to be. My Apple Watch is a bit better (no idea on cost as it was an award from work for hubby and he gave it to me as he wouldn’t use it). I find it’s fairly accurate in everything except stand hours. My arm has to move up and down or side to side for a full 45 seconds or more to be considered standing. I can cook for an hour and it won’t read as standing because my movements aren’t ‘jerky’. But when I had different settings it asked if I had a fall, needed help or whatever. Can’t remember exactly so I shut that off. It was way too sensitive in the beginning lol. The el cheapo $15 (on sale) one is bought didn’t actually tell me anything other than steps and in its app I could out in weight and height for a calorie needs count. Wasn’t worth it for that one at all. This app is the best tool I’ve found and to me the watch just compliments it.

Pretty cool place. I assumed that 100% of your swims were in a pool.

jazzy, my swims are 100% in the pool these days. I can't watch all three of these guys from in the water. too many jet skis and other stuff going on. plus, I'm a big sissy about ocean water if I can't see. working on it, but mission bay is a little brackish anyways, so nope.

Thanks all! We are trying to get as much normal as we can get right now. The dogs help. Glad they bring puppy joy on the internet as well.

Aw yay!! I love your pups! 🥰 Looks like an awesome time out. I’m sure telling those pup not to get in the water is like telling a bunch of toddlers to stop climbing the furniture. As soon I turn my head, my little Gremlins are standing on the living room table and drawing happy faces on what WAS an untouched and clean wall. 😩

Lol, Chris! They must take after their mama. They see me bouncing off the walls all day like a rabid ferret and mimic me. I’m still waiting for you to come by and babysit them by the way. Mama needs a nap, so hurry! Will pay in pelmeni. 🙏🏻
