J41's Journal, 09 August 2018

I took some blood work back in June. Results came back with high cholesterol (high LDL and normal HDL) as well as high triglycerides. With a family history of kidney failure, heart failure, gout and pre-diabetes I felt it was appropriate to take action. Since June I’ve focused on changing my diet in the following ways: reducing saturated fats; increasing unsaturated fats (eg nuts, fish); 30+g fiber daily; low glycemic index foods (eg steel cut oats vs rolled oats); and, eliminating refined sugar.

Although I don’t avoid carbohydrates, my daily goal is to not exceed 150g/day and I don’t exceed my daily caloric intake (currently at 1900calories/day. I’ve alsogetting focused on being physically active when opportunities present themselves.

I’m scheduled to redo blood work at the end of August. I want to avoid getting on medication and I’m hopeful that diet and exercise will effectively improve my cholesterol and triglyceride numbers.

Best wishes to all of you in your own journeys.
