Annie42's Journal, 28 May 2016

Today is hard. Would have been Daddy's 94th birthday. I miss him so much. It doesn't seem like its been 6 years since he died. I get those 'emotional ambushes' on birthdays, holidays and certain times of the year. Memorial day is hard too. Every time I hear Taps and the 21 gun salute....I completely break down. Reminds me of the morning of his funeral. The honor guard had driven up from Kentucky. I can't share much beyond that, as I will completely breakdown while typing. Trying extra hard to keep the emotional eating monster subdued. So far, so good. I might have to do some planning for this afternoon and evening. But, if I keep reminding myself that "comfort food" isn't going to comfort me...it should be fine. Have a blessed day all. Annie

Sometimes you just need to let go and cry it out! You may find that not holding it in is better for your emotional ambushes -- and it is difficult to eat while you are crying! (I am not being facetious, I really do find that an occasional emotional meltdown, whatever the reason, seems to cleanse the soul, and I don't have the same cravings I did before.)

Awww, thanks buddies! I know...I've cried alot. The ache never really goes away, but it changes over time, and seems to emerge more at some times than others. I started crying while I was typing the original post and my son (18) looks over startled and is like, "Mom! What's wrong??? Why are you crying? Are you okay?" It was so sweet. I just reminded him that it was Popie's birthday...and he knew. Sweet kid.

Cry because you miss him, but on his birthday, celebrate his life and the legacy he left behind. He was a good father and his greatest wish was to see his children happy, not grieving and damaging their health with emotional eating. You know he always wanted the best for you and you make him proud. Hold your head up and let him see the joy he created in your life :)

I know this will sound strange, because you might think you need to avoid the kitchen, but I have found that preparing food actually reduces my appetite and cravings, and not because I am snacking and tasting while preparing. It just seems to help satisfy me to be chopping vegetables, etc....I think that when we eat fast food, or prepared food, we aren't spending any time preparing it, and that's one of the reasons we overeat with ready made meals. So get in the kitchen, and chop up some veggies, grill some meat, and make a great meal.
