crabby Kat's Journal, 23 September 2015

My weight continues to vary just a bit up and down, but at least it's above 120. I'm sure that will change as I'm able to do more exercises and rebuild muscles.

It seems that it takes longer to heal from a tear of the piriformis (that's what a bad strain is)than it does to heal from a total knee replacement.

My physical therapist gave me more details yesterday; it takes 8 weeks for the muscle to heal, but the muscle fibers heal in a jumble. That's why I'm taking my time adding small things that work that left glute muscle, so that the muscle gets tiny micro-tears that help it to heal in the proper direction. I've added a bunch of new exercises, small moves, but in the right direction. Side stepping in partial squats, doing a bridge while keeping my glutes relaxed, and doing arm circles and then unilateral arm movements while holding the bridge. Challenging, so I love it.

No word on when I can return to Zumba and Pilates, but I get the impression it will still be several weeks. Sigh. I'm riding my exercise bike to Zumba-worthy music, and enjoying each day as it comes. I haven't gained a ton of weight or gotten soft and week just because I can't exercise as much as I'd like.

I haven't lost my joy; I've just refocused it on taking care of myself, on preparing healthy meals, doing my exercises, enjoying the beauty of nature, helping my partner with work stuff; life is good!

So, SO, so, SO happy to hear you are healing little by little. I did not know it was a muscle tear - is that from moving weird or overuse? I have another buddy who had a similar event with his bicep while lifting. Yes, we want you to heal in the right direction. I am cautious when doing particular moves at the gym to avoid any injuries. My achilles tendon finally healed and now I have just a slight pain inside my right thigh - probably adductor muscle - so I avoid lunges or any impact moves. Hang in there Buddy!

And thanks for the comments on my journal, I didn't see them before I posted here. Sorry you are injured but life has a way of making you slow down for reasons we aren't always aware of. Like the idea of the 365 days of happy pics. What a nice idea :)

HCB, the tear/strain was caused by coming back too quickly to all-in Zumba after each of my total knee replacements. Muscle memory took my body back to the bad alignment caused by the bad knees in the first place, as well as a hyper-mobile SI joint. This time, I'm teaching my body the proper alignment before starting back to Zumba and Pilates (heavy on core strengthening, without gluteal involvement yet). When I do return, I will start slow, low intensity. Smart moves, this time around, so I get it right.
