theWolf56's Journal, 07 May 2018

I have lost a little bit of weight by just watching what I ate for most of the last 3 weeks. However, on Friday I started a new diet (and lifestyle) change after doing a lot of research, reading a lot of success stories, and watching a few documentaries (not a primary method of research as most have an agenda).

In the past, I have lost a lot of weight with commercial diet plans. I lost some weight with Weight Watchers, but ate so little during the day that I was constantly banking points and could not maintain any weight loss. Lost around 70 pounds on Medifast several years ago, but could not maintain the weight off (gained more back than I had lost) and I was always hungry on that diet. It's hard to stay with something when you hate every minute of it and cannot wait to be off of the diet.

I started reading a lot more about the ketogenic diet. Although Medifast tries to keep you in a state of ketosis, a lot of the calories (out of the 800 to 1,000 per day you are allotted, regardless of starting weight, exercise level, sex, age, etc. in the old 5+1 plan) in that diet are carbs. Made a small meal plan with my wife and went shopping last week and started the actual diet on Friday. I could not believe how much food I can eat on this diet to start. Using the different calorie calculators on the web, I went with an average number that is quite a bit lower than Fatsecret's calculator. Even thought the caloric target was quite a bit lower, I still cannot eat that much in calories without going over my daily allotment of carbs. It's not that I am starving myself, I just cannot physically force more food in me as I feel so full after each meal.

The diet just seems too good to be true and my wife and I still remain skeptical. Everything about it is counter to all of the nutritional information we have been taught for years. It's going to be hard cutting out the amount of carbs that is necessary for this diet in the long run, but I hope it gets easier. It was pretty eye-opening to look at a nutritional label and see how many carbs in things that you would never expect carbs. It also seems to be a lot of work with the cooking, but we are trying to learn ways to save time on prep. It's also only a couple of days in, but I have already seen/felt a few of the side effects, but I just keep looking forward.

I apologize for the long-worded post, but it is definitely cathartic to type this out in an environment like this. I seriously doubt I'll be journaling much, but I will still be on here tracking my intake and trying to be supportive to others as well.

Thanks!

I started back on keto today. I did it about two years ago and felt great, and lost some LBs also. I watched "The Magic Pill" this weekend on Netflix as a boost to get motivated...and it worked. Good luck to you and the missus!

I recently started on Personal Trainer Foods. I've logged the last two days and I think it might be keto.

I've been following keto this time around. I have lost 75 lbs in a year on a low carb diet in the past. Lost 20 lbs. already in 5 weeks. This diet stops my GERD problems - actually stopped medicine with one week being off grains. I will eat no other way from now on. Daughter is doing this with me so I have some family support even though I cook for one.

We need to stop looking at it as a diet - a way of eating lifestyle - it needs to be a permanent change for a lifetime. That way you never fail at the diet - you just make way of eating choices whether positive or negative- PS - the cooking does get easier. Stay with grilled meats. fresh vegetables, a little dairy, eggs and nuts. I always use precut or frozen vegetables and it cuts out alot of the prep time.

I have been on it for two months. It is a lifestyle change. And you are correct, it is almost antithetical to all the propaganda we have been taught! It has taken me two months to get my head around to eat enough fat. I was eating low carb, just too much protein, so not in ketosis. Good luck on your journey. If you get stuck , reach out to all these great people onFS.

I have lost 74lbs since January 2nd of this year on keto. My energy level, my mental cognition, my sleep...all has improved. I cannot say enough about how much this has improved my life.

I understand, I've been down that same road, and you can overcome, just like us all, where here to help and encourage each other. You can do it

This is the easiest plan for me as well. Yes, it as very hard to let go of the no fat and lots of veggies and fruit routine touted by every "professional". The keto way does allow for low carbs that you can fit into your macros. Huge variety. Now the plans are more what works for each individual. Low carb/Keto seems to be working for me. I don't feel the shadow of diabetes hanging over my head :)

Thank you everyone for the kind words, support, and encouragement. I am very lucky in that overall, the foods I crave are good for this diet (cheeseburgers (harder without the bun), bacon, steak, seafood, various cheeses, eggs, macadamia nuts, dark chocolate, etc.). I'm also lucky that I am doing this with my wife. She does not need to lose much weight, but wants to eat better. it is harder for her as she really likes her breads and potatoes, but we've found a few recipes that may work for her pizza cravings. We've done the mashed cauliflower instead of potatoes route and have a recipe for shrimp risotto using cauliflower that I'm going to have to calculate the carbs on (used it on Medifast and it was quite tasty, so I'm hoping it works). My understanding of ketosis is it is the overall metabolic state that covers the conversion of stored fat to ketone bodies, which are then converted by our cell's mitochondria to ATP, which is the form of energy cells use to function. I have not studied cellular metabolism (used to have to know the Krebs cycle by memory due to my college major) in a very long time, and never heard of the term ketosis until I did Medifast years ago, but I hope that is at least slightly helpful. After all of the responses, I may actually enter my bio after only being a member for almost 8 years. I'm so glad I decided to actually reach out to our community. Thanks again for all of the support and I hope to be able to return that support when someone needs it.

Good drop, all the best for the Keto diet

Too good to be true? Explain. If you're talking about the large drop that is almost entirely water weight/glycogen. All diets come down to CICO. If avoiding carbs helps with the CI portion, then stick with it. :)
