March 1st... Spring in my book! When I was a child, my grandmother and I would walk around the farm and look for signs of spring. Here in Raleigh we have daffodils about to bloom, but back in Kansas, things are just beginning to wake up. The robins return, fat from their time in the south. Little leaf buds start pushing out of the twigs on the cottonwoods. Tiny green spikes of grape hyacinths poke up through any last bits of snow... you get the idea. It was a special, magical time for just the two of us. My grandmother was a witchy woman. Not that she practiced the occult, but she had powers. She knew when my mother would call in from the road. She could put a hex on people who made her mad. She kept the summer storms from blowing the wheat down in the fields. I mean POWERS!

So anyway, here it is, practically spring. Time for growing and creating and new fresh foods. I'm still doing well on the Sugar Strike. The scale was up this am instead of down, but I can see the water hanging out in my ankles... so I hope it's just water making me heavier today. I still haven't had a binge since starting the Strike. This is the longest I've gone in some time. I've had a few panicky moments while shopping... especially at Target. They have some of my very favorite junky foods there. I had to go into the food section to get some distilled water for a project... then I had to leave quickly! I made it through though! Yay me! As a little trial on Sunday, I had one two small pancakes, baked in a dry skillet (no oil) with just a little real maple syrup. They were tasty, and I didn't get the urge to go back and make a bunch more with butter and a ton of syrup. I didn't get the sugar crash hours later like I usually do on a pancake day... gee, I wonder why!

I'm still struggling to get more protein into my diet without adding a lot of fat. A veggie friend suggested beans and rice... together they make a complete protein that we can absorb better than either on its own. So I think I'll make Gallo Pinto for dinner tonight.
