So, I have a few small food goals and a non weight related habit I want to begin incorporating into my life. The food goals regard how to deal with meals when I'm out of town, which is going to be the case for 2 nights next week on my birding expedition. The other habit is actually a re-incorporation. I used to meditate everyday for a good 3 and a half years. I've definitely become lax in this habit since last November and especially since I started working out 5 days a week.

With regards to how I handle food when I'm away from home, my preference is start out small, realistic, and reasonable. It's not like I'm out of town on trips all the time. As a girl whose specialized field is psycho-social anthropology, NOT trying new things including different foods isn't an option. That's like telling me to give up some of the very things I love about life. But, I feel it's feasible to slip in a few goals that certainly won't hurt to do when I'm away and may possibly minimize the impact of eating outside my daily WOE. So here goes:

1) I'm bringing my weights with me. I may not have the recumbent bike, but I can still do my upper body and floor exercises on at least 1 one of those nights. We may be wine tasting on the second day, so working out on the second night may not be a reasonable option, but I don't foresee any reason why I can't fit it in on Saturday when we get to the Hotel after spending time at the Falls. I'll explore the hotel to see if they have a fitness room. I have to be careful about treadmills as it can exacerbate my hip pain, but if they have a stationary bike or even an elliptical, I might be able to get some cardio in there as well.

2) I will attempt to incorporate some of the basic attributes of my WOE during meals. Usually Friday - Sunday, I have a 2 egg veggie omelette and a starchy complex carb (potatoes). This always lasts me through the afternoon, so I don't eat lunch. My mother and I already agreed, we will not do any continental breakfasts. I've never seen a continental breakfast that offered anything substantial aside from coffee. The fruit is usually horrible, the cereal lasts in your stomach for an hour, and the yogurt is processed and sugary. So, we both have decided to make sure we eat something close to what we might normally have at home, and forego lunch. My dinners alway include a lean meat, starchy complex carb, and a vegetable. So, whatever restaurant we go to, I will try to ensure the meals I order for dinner contain at least these 3 things. There will likely be an appetizer of some sort, and my mother and I have split desserts for over a decade now. That being stated I will log everything as best I can.

3) There will be no splurge day this Thursday or the Thursday after.

Other than that, we'll just see how it goes. I have no desire to set up restrictions I can't adhere to so I can indulge in a bout of self shaming afterwards. That isn't going to do this body any favors. But, I can set up minimums that are attainable and foster encouragement to simply resume when the path swerves a little here and there. Enough said.

As for meditation. I want to start meditating at least once a week. When I do meditate, I usually do it for 40 minutes at a time. It's a combination of techniques I learned from studying "mindful" meditation and meditations for those that have incurred psychological trauma. I have found it to be exceedingly helpful in releasing tension, clearing my head, increasing focus, letting go, and or/learning to sit with emotions and feelings that are not always easy to sit with. In fact, I just did one and feel wonderful.

On a side note: I noticed when I laid down today how flat my stomach is becoming. It actually goes a little concave around my waist and belly. It was the oddest sensation. I realized I was seeing more of my feet than I have in a long time. So, while I was focusing on my breathing, I asked myself how it felt to see my body transformed in this way. The only two words that came to mind were "weird" and "good". I noticed when I was going through the stretching portion how much less weight I felt on my belly. And, then I just felt like I was floating, which is good. The greatest benefit of meditation is that it gives both the form and mind a break.

Anyhow, I hope everyone is having a wonderful, tranquil Saturday!

All right! I think your goals are definitely doable! Are you talking the Multnomah Falls by chance? My daughter used to work at their terrace side grill out there. Spendy place to eat. Some of the better options if you are eating in the Columbia Gorge on the Western end are coming into Chang's Grill in Gresham or China Garden or eating in Stevenson they have a few good restaurants and there's a not bad deli right at the port in Cascade Locks I hear. If you are heading further afield than my fair part of the country I wish you smooth skies and lots of birds to see! 🙋🏻

Hi SMP - Your close, we're going to the Palouse Falls in Washington State. It's apparently out in the middle of nowhere, but it's about 45 minutes from Walla, Walla, which is wine tasting country in Washington state. We decided to do a reverse and go straight to Walla, Walla on Saturday (since we don't know if the wineries are open Sunday), and then go to Palouse Falls on Sunday. So take the above workout goal and switch it Sunday. And, yes I am looking forward to seeing some birds!! We do citizen science projects in our own backyard for birds, which is very coniferous. The birdie word must have gotten around to our spring migrators that "this" backyard was the place to be, we have so many this year, it's wonderful! So, I can't wait to see what shows up in the Palouse :-)

LOL EVERYWHERE in the Gorge is wine or micro brew tasting area, there are some VERY fine hops producers over there and so you have excellent breweries and wineries scattered all about. You can't throw a stick without hitting one! 🤷🏻‍♀️ When I was at an International Dorm at OSU we even got the French students to admit the the NW wines were "good." (Through gritted teeth. LOL) 🤣I haven't been as far East as Walla, Walla in a few years though, that part of the area is too dry for me. 🤗Hopefully you and your mom will enjoy the trip! 🙋🏻
