On my last shopping trip to Aldi I bought a pair of chilled vacuum packaged gammon steaks with two pats of peppered butter. At only £1.99 for a pack of two, (400 grams) I didn’t think it would be anything special. I planned to have one for either lunch or dinner on Saturday.

I had treated myself to a generous frittata for breakfast and didn’t have lunch until late afternoon. I decided to pan fry one of the gammon steaks in butter, then add the rather generous pat of black peppered butter during the last couple of minutes in the pan. I steamed a mixture of vegetables in the microwave while the gammon steak cooked.

The meal came together really easily and was so very quick to cook. The whole thing only took about eight minutes from start to finish. Wow was I in for a surprise the gammon was excellent and the black peppered butter made it outstanding. The carrots, broccoli and sweet corn were a good accompaniment. Next time I must remember to add some pineapple.

I enjoyed it so much; I immediately cooked the other steak with some more steamed veg. The whole thing was very filling and super tasty and oh so quick to cook up. Unsurprisingly I wasn’t hungry at dinner time, but then I suppose I had both my dinner and lunch together. Those gammon steaks are definitely going to be on my shopping list again, but this time with a small tin of pineapple rings.

The macros were good too; they checked out at only 375 calories and 12 carbohydrates per meal.

I don't go to Aldi very often as I do most of my shopping online but next time I'm in there I'll look out for them. I'm sure my hubby would love them too. Co-incidentally I cooked him two gammon steaks last night - with mushrooms, tomatoes and sweet potato oven fries. He said the sweet potato didn't go well with it. I think he'd have preferred sweetcorn. He'll be cooking for me next week and since he can't cook that'll be interesting - lol!

They sound good - I need to bite the bullet and visit Aldi at some point although I use Lidl now and then and get similar bargains (Aldi is a bit of a trek from home)

I am an avid Lidl shopper. Beautiful Fillet Steak at £4.99 each. I did a full weeks shopping, in Lidl, for £50. That was Friday evening. And that included my Fillet Steak.

I find I have to pick and choose with Lidl, some things are better than others. I hate shopping with a passion though, so tend to take the easy way out and use Ocado. I guess I'm lucky I can afford to make that choice. I do need to go to Lidl to get some sherry and other stuff though. Having said that, I found two bottles of Spanish "Baileys" that the outlaws must have left me when they were here last ... along with 5l of brandy 😳 I guess they took on board the fact the OH moaned that the time before they came, they drank more brandy than they'd brought us. I generally only use it for cooking so I think that might last me a while 😉
