MerryWeather's Journal, 14 November 2011

So I worked out some math. Today is ONE MONTH of new lifestyle change.
After a month, I have averaged 1.875 pound weightloss per week. This is more rapid than my predicted 1-1.5 pounds a week. So even on the weeks I don’t lose, I don’t have to worry because I know my body moving in the right direction.

After one month, I know that I LOVE GOOD WHOLESOME FOOD. I don’t miss the fried foods as much as I thought I would, and I am LOVING life without heartburn, stomach pains from eating to much, and slugging feeling.

What I use to think I couldn’t live without that now I can’t stand: Mayonnaise. (I guess there is only one; I thought/hoped I was going to list a series of things) I never liked margin, I was a butter gal all the way, but I still CAN’T STAND Margarine. I do miss butter a little.

Changes that were easier then I thought:
Switching to Whole wheat
Eating more fruits and vegetables
Running 3-4 times a week
Recording food intake
Learning and studying about foods, nutrients, vitamins and minerals
Choosing nutrient dense foods over poor food choices.

Challenges I am still working on:
Not thinking about food all the time
Feeling hungry (or just wanting to eat) all the time

I think what might help me in my life long change of good eating to do incorporate maintenance steps along the way. I need a time period where I am not feeling hungry. So I think if I don’t have the 500 calorie deficit for one week after a month or two of weight loss, I can see what it will fill like when my body is not deprived. I am thinking that especially during the holidays, maybe just a maintenance week will help me enjoy healthy eating when being around abundance of unhealthy foods in I feel more full and less deprived. I don’t know, I love the weight loss that I have had, and I don’t really want to push back my goals. However, I don’t want to get burned out and tired of the hungry feeling all the time and give up altogether. DECITIONS ARE THE WORST!

If those of you out there, who have been at it a lot longer, have any advice/suggestions, please share. You are all a wealth of knowledge for me and I really appreciate all you who have shared your stories. It has helped me tremendously, especially at the very beginning.

What a great post! I love that you reach into yourself and analyze your progress. You're doing great. One question though - why do you feel hungry? At any level, there should be no reason to be hungry - are you eating foods that are truly filling you up? Don't feel deprived - there is no reason to. Try to look at your meal choices (I have to admit, I haven't looked at your food journal - you're doing great with what you're doing!), and see if you can optimize to get MORE food. Or is it more of a mental thing? Are you hungry because you want snacks?

What a great post! I love that you reach into yourself and analyze your progress. You're doing great. One question though - why do you feel hungry? At any level, there should be no reason to be hungry - are you eating foods that are truly filling you up? Don't feel deprived - there is no reason to. Try to look at your meal choices (I have to admit, I haven't looked at your food journal - you're doing great with what you're doing!), and see if you can optimize to get MORE food. Or is it more of a mental thing? Are you hungry because you want snacks? I have to admit I think you hit the nail on the head with the hunger being a mental thing. I like to eat! I always want more food. But I notice that when I am busy or engaged in something (wrapped up in work, scrapbooking at home, or chatting on the phone), I forget about food and don’t feel hungry, but as soon as I finish my tasks, I start thinking of when I am going to eat next and the hunger hits me like a tone of bricks. So I know it is mental more than an actual physical hunger. I am logging my food on FitnessPal.com. I started with FS first and I love this site for so many reasons, but for logging my food, I have found that one has a much larger database and it makes it easier for me. For a short while I was logging in both site, but now I just log food and exercise over there. I do feel like my food choices are pretty good. I am going for whole grains, vegetables, and other nurturance dense foods. I incorporate some dessert food but I still try to make healthier choices (dark chocolate covered blueberries, or healthy choice frozen chocolate bars…etc.). THANKS SO MUCH for your comment and observations. It really helps me rethink what is going on and what is hunger and what is just “whining”
