Sugar Cat's Journal, 06 July 2016

I had an EMG to test my nerve conduction and see why my hands are constantly going numb. The tests show my nerves are fine. So I say "Is there any other reason my hands are going numb?" The doctor says "Well when some people gain a lot of weight, they may gain weight in the wrists, which can bring about numbness". Did my doctor just say I have fat wrists? HA! Let me add that to my list of fat body parts.

Neuropathy in both hands since 2000. Was tested for MS, and Nerve Damage thankfully cleared for both. It's been blamed on Carpel Tunnel. I have very large breasts, so it's been blamed on my bra straps. 16 years later, still no answers and spend everyday feeling like I'm wearing gloves made of pot scrubber material. Just glad it isn't due to Diabetes. Fat wrists is not one I've heard before. I think I'll go with that one. Hopefully you will get an answer and some relief.

Thank you jeaniieselby. And I'm sorry you are going through the same thing, although yours sounds a bit worse than mine. And 16 years, oh my goodness! I'm curious: do you get any relief from this when you don't wear a bra, like when showering? If so, then maybe it is your bra straps...Anyway, I hope you find relief, and soon. Sixteen years is too long!

Sugar Cat - 16 years is a very long time. It used to be more sporadic, but with years and weight it has become a part of my every waking hour. While the removal of "Le Bra" at the end of the day brings much relief to my aching back and shoulders, it does NOT remove the pot scrubber gloves from my hands. I've given up many of the crafts I enjoyed doing like cross stitch as I cannot wield a needle with assurance. Don't get me started on what my food prep skills have been reduced to. Hence my excuse to eat out, rather than cook. I have to rely on the dishwasher, as I can't trust my sense of touch to ensure when my dishes are truly clean. I find that unless I'm paying close attention, I've turned into quite a klutz and constantly dropping things. Doesn't matter how tight a grip I thought I had. I truly don't wish this on anyone and send you my very best wishes for a speedy recovery and/or diagnosis plus treatment of yours.

I have had numbness and pain in both my left and right hands. The doctor recommended I sleep with arm splints and if it did not get better; to take the Nerve test. I started sleeping with the splints (a real pain as I love to tuck my hands under my while sleeping on my stomach) and I also started doing neck stretches and nerve gliding exercises. After about 3 weeks of doing all of the above along with taking ibuprofen, the pain started to subside. I now do the exercises a couple times a week and try my best not to sleep on my arms. I hope you both get some relief soon.

Numbness could also be due to muscle tension! I'm a massage therapist and I see it all the time. A lot of times you should have tension in your neck, shoulders and arms that cause numbness and tingling into your hands, due to restriction of nerves. A massage, stretching, yoga, all could possibly help!

Ok, I have had this issue. And I discovered what it was. And it was NOT my wrists. OR my fat. Is was a nerve in my elbows. Make sure you are stretching and bending your arms over the course of the day. Especially is you type a lot or play a lot of games. The part of your arms where the nerves for your hands reside is in the part of your elbow that rests on the table. Doctors are idiots. Fat wrists. Pshhh.

My biggest concern would be diabetic neuropathies. Do you know if you're diabetic or not? Good luck in figuring it out!

About a dozen years ago, my sister had numbness in her hands after she lost weight on one of her "downs". The doctors attributed it to weight changes...eventually it calmed and she regained nerve function.

xohhjeez I work full-time in the dental field, so muscle tension is definitely a problem for me, although I had never considered muscle tension to be a possible culprit. And now I have a good excuse to get a massage! Caterpillar2Butterfly I was once borderline diabetic but now my blood glucose is under control, according to blood tests. knuckles the mgtow monk I kinda thought about my elbow(s) being a contributing factor, because I have noticed some slight pain in the elbow area when my hands go numb. Wow, I never realized how many possibilities it could be. Thanks for the communication, friends.
