Gleny1220's Journal, 01 April 2016

For the past year or more I have suffered with bipolar depression. I am on medication and therapy to aid with my condition. It so happens that my meds side effects are weight gain among others. I have gained 45 in just one year and losing has been a nightmare. I still have night cravings, sweet craving and worst of all I desire to binge when I'm anxious, stressed or depressed. Suffering with depression can put an extra strain on dieting. At least I can say is that exercise has helped my mood and my overall emotional feeling. But some days I feel too down or tired to workout.

If you are down and drained just reach out to your FS family and maybe that can help you through the rough times.

Welcome. Unfortunately I know all too well about bipolar disorder, as my 22 year old daughter has it as well. The atypical antipsychotics (e.g. Risperdal, Abilify, Geodon, etc.) are known to wreak havoc with one's metabolism. Since they primarily effect carbohydrate metabolism, I suggest going on a low carb way of eating, as you are likely to get better and more long lasting results. Unfortunately this medication has worked wonders. I have not had severe depressive episodes like I used to. I'm afraid to make any changes. I've tried so many different meds before, till finally this one worked. About the sweet cravings I've tried rice cakes (35 calories), and Atkins bars. It's helping a little to calm my cravings. Thank you for your suggestions.

I guess that works for calorie counting too... gum?? tooth picks....

Needless to say, dealing with depression supercedes worry about weight. That said, I totally understand your anxiety about the weight gain and the need to find balance. Stay the course with your depression meds. You WILL find solution to weight loss in time. Be patient and kind with yourself. If you are not diabetic, retrain your tastebuds to appreciate the natural sweetness of fruit. 1/2 small green apple with peanut butter satisfies both sweet and protein cravings.

Thank you Dee Koro for your suggestion, I'm going to try that, I've never tried green apple with peanut butter.

If you can find a workout partner that will hold you accountable it will help getting your exercise in. I find that any sort of high intensity exercise really gets the endorphins going. I understand completely the emotional eating. The desire for the dopamine release from sweet foods can become overwhelming. I find that staying busy and having hobbies help. You have my sympathy and hopefully you can find a happy compromise. Having psych issues messes with your health on so many levels. Best of luck!
