Firebelly's Journal, 27 February 2016

Whenever I go out and do a particularly hard errand, I find it hard to not use food as a reward. My thought is, "I'm already out and successfully dealt with the stressful appointment, so why not stop by my favorite store and see what the food cafe has today or grab a protein bar as a treat?"

How do other FatSecret members reward themselves after doing something they didn't want to do and had been putting off forever? I have social anxiety, am kind of agoraphobic, and work from home -- so leaving the house is a big stressor in itself yet something I should also do as therapy in order to overcome the fear.

What can I substitute as a reward to myself instead of food for overcoming my personal battles, going out, and getting errands done?

I used to reward myself with heavy treats like ice cream and have gotten better about that since starting FatSecret -- now I typically use protein bars but to an excess, which throws off my low carb eating habits, calorie counts, and reinvigorates a craving for sweets.

I really could use some good advice and suggestions as I'm at a loss and feel like crying. If leaving the house means that I'm going to overeat unhealthily, maybe I should just stop fighting my agoraphobia and other demons and stay home -- at least then I'd be thin!

Just a couple of ideas. First off, you have to start looking at food differently. Its not a reward or a comfort-tool; Food is fuel. Period. That's all. It fuels your body so you may function. Too little impairs function; too much impairs function; bad choices impair function. So, make sure you put "clean fuel" into your body/engine. Secondly, think about how much money you spend each time you "reward" youself. Set that money aside each time you feel like "rewarding" yourself. Put it towards a new outfit, new car, a treadmill, or vacation/trip. Once you reach your weight loss goals, you may find that you have saved enough on the edible "rewards" so you can afford some thing very cool. On that note, the whole treadmill thing might be kinda cool for you. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins- which is kind of like a natural, feel good, sort of high. It sounds like you could use something like that. Going to a gym sounds like its out of the question for you at this time, so getting some kind of exercise apparatus that you can do in the privacy of your own home would be ideal. After my parents died, I experienced trigger moments. There would be an enormous rush of emotions I'd experience, brought on by some kind of conflict. To jerk myself out of that trigger moment, I'd grab a glass of ice water to shock my system. Those are just a few ideas. I do hope you will seek some help with these issues, as I am no pro. hugs, and best wishes, friend.

I have the same problem! I tried making a new healthy receipe as my food treat, instead of a high calorie treat, which has helped me.
