For those of you on a low carb diet, I was wondering if you could help me out. I've never tried it before, but I thought since I am essentially starting over I might try something other than just plain old calorie counting (which never seemed to work all that well anyway). I am planning on staying under 30 carbs a day for now, but is it true I can eat as much as I want as long as I stay under on carbs? How can that really work? Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Not true. Taking it to extremes, you will not loose weight if you eat 10k calories of fat & protein in a day. You'll still need to keep the calories lower then what ever your maintenance intake is. There are plenty of sites out there that will help you calculate your BMR/TDEE; the amount of calories your body uses to keep you alive each day. After you Keto-Adapt, you'll find that eating more fats becomes more filling. Short of having issues with emotional eating, you should find it easier to eat less naturally. The sense of fullness comes on much quicker with the lack of carbs, at least it does for me. I could eat a whole big 'ol bag of chips, or even several baskets of endless steak fries before my sense of being full kicked in. If I have a tablespoon of butter or coconut oil, roughly 120 calories, I can feel full pretty quick. Not necessarily the 'feeling the belly, is it bulging full', but the idea that any hunger that I had is no longer there. People on Keto loose weight at 1000, 1500 & 2000 calories per day. It's all pretty individualistic. You'll only need to count Net-Carbs (Carbs minus Fiber) if you want to get exact, but counting carbs and limiting them overall is an even better idea IMHO. Keep them low (<20g/day) in the beginning for a couple of weeks. You'll know when you get through to the other side and become Keto Adapated and then you can, if you want/must/need, begin upping them slowly to about 50g/day. Again everyone is different. Someone people can stay in Ketosis at 50g/day, me I've got issues dropping out of Ketosis at 20g - 25g/day. If you want to get results from Keto (LCHF), you'll need to remain <20g/day until your body adapts to running off of fatty acids and ketones. You won't know how long that is until it happens. Some people can do it in a couple of days, some it takes weeks. Search 'Ketoflu' for more details on what to expect and what you can do to lessen the impact. Some people get it, some don't. You'll need to be all in, but make sure you see this (or any other way-of-eating) as a lifestyle change and not something you're going to do today, this week or this month. Feel free to PM me if you've got further questions, etc... Comments aren't always the best at answering complicated questions. Good Luck!

That is a misconception, Michaelsgirl515. Here is what happens... you lower your carb intake (induction period states 20 grams or less), you increase your fat intake and keep your protein at a moderate level. some guidelines suggest a 75/20/5% where 75% of daily caloric intake is fat, 20% is protein and 5% is carbohydrates. Once you lessen the amount of carbs and you introduce good fats into your diet (coconut oil, butter, lard, bacon grease, avocados, heavy cream, full fat cheeses, and nuts) you will suddenly begin to feel fuller after a meal. A meal of 2 eggs and 3 strips of bacon with maybe a 1/2 an avocado, can keep you feeling full for 8-12 hours. Then say a dinner of a fatty meat, or meat cooked in fat, with some steamed vegetables in butter or cheese sauce... that will sustain you for another 8-12 hours. You may find yourself wanting a small snack, but always chose a fat and/or protein snack.. leave carbing for meals. Okay, so you are only eating twice a day now, and maybe, maybe not a snack. You will automatically be eating way less than you would normally consume eating three normal meals, and 2-3 snacks per day. You will feel full, satiated, have more energy... the fullness and satiation come almost immediately.. the energy may take a couple of days as your body adjusts to burning fat for fuel. So to make a long story short, no you cannot eat all you want so long as you count your carbs for the simple reason you won't want to overeat. Why force yourself to eat if you are not hungry just because the clock says oh, it's breakfast time or lunch time or dinner time... no, you listen to your body. It will tell you when you are hungry again.. usually around the 8 hr mark. A few tips when you begin... drink a lot of water, if you get dizzy or light-headed or have leg cramps, drink pickle juice, sauerkraut juice, beef or chicken bouillon, or lemon water with a dash of sea salt. That replenishes the electrolytes that go out of our bodies when we do not ingest things like wheat which holds salt and potassium in our bodies. Good luck! If you'd like to add me as a buddy and get other tips or ask questions, feel free to do so.

Thank you so much! Great answers. So, I will start with <20g a day for now and see how it goes. I guess I will also not eat the entire batch of deviled eggs I just made ;)

@Ravyne - WOW; SO WELL SAID! Very on point with everything you said.

Yeah, you won't need to eat a lot to feel full. I feel full on ~1200 calories a day, way below my 'Eat this and you'll loose weight' level. You'll find what works best for you, the weight will come off if you can stick with it. The first few days/week is the toughest. Sort of like detoxing off of narcotics, the first bit is tough but it gets easier.

Well, I am used to that horrible detox feeling anyway, I just quit smoking and it doesn't get much worse than that!

@Michaelsgirl515 - you can eat some of it... depends on how many eggs you used, how much mayonnaise and if you added any carbs. it would be safe to consume up to 3 eggs at a meal, but you wouldn't want to eat more than 2 carbs per serving. Some mayonnaises have carbs in them (Dukes does not) and if you added onions or sweet pickle relish, there will be additional carbs.

@Frosty... thanks :)

I made a dozen, lol. I wouldn't really eat them all, but I did eat like 4. I used Cains mayo (no carbs) and did not add relish. Did add green onions. I didn't even think about the carbs in those...I guess I will save the rest for tomorrow!

On average, I consume around 1500-1800 calories per day and around 80% of that is fat... I am losing about 3 lbs per week this way. I checked my caloric intake for what I would normally consumed before going low carb and shockingly, I was average 2500-3500 calories per day. And that was without eating a lot of candy, cookies, or other sweet treats and without consuming sugary drinks.
