Fasting isn't really a good idea unless you have to. It drops your body into starvation mode and makes it retain more of what you eat when resume eating again. Plus it messes with your digestive system after a longer period of time.

Intermittent Fasting is actually great for your body-- but IF is typically just a shorter period of time that you eat during the day. I just did one through this morning-- a 16/ 8. If you fast through the night it works out really well! There are lots of benefits to IF in that manner. One thing that it helps you with is keeping your calories low. You don't necessarily eat larger meals by skipping breakfast... or dinner, if you prefer. There are loads of articles about it out there, this one does a great job at explaining Intermittent Fasting to a beginner: http://jamesclear.com/the-beginners-guide-to-intermittent-fasting.

P.S. You can have up to 50 calories and still be considered in a Fasting State-- so black coffee is fine on an IF!

Gothcheeka all you have stated about fasting is a myth. I have lost over 14kg in 13 weeks by following a fasting regimen. I am at my lowest weight in over 12 years and I lost 8kg before going back to the gym so that I can attribute my weight loss directly to fasting itself. I eat cakes, rice, burgers, chocolates, ice cream, etc. and I still lost weight. Feel free to browse my journal and food diary and you will be amazed. I am following the 5:2 Fast Diet but opted to make it a 4:3 Fast Diet and combined it with Intermittent Fasting because they complement each other so well. Basically I "fast" on Mon, Wed and Fri. "Fast" means eating 600 Calories for men and 500 Calories for women. On my non-fast days I aim to eat under my RDI of calories but on my weekends I allow myself to exceed my RDI. I don't have breakfast as I try to keep my 16 hours from 8pm til midday the next day free of any food consumption but I do have water, coffee(with 15ml milk) or green tea. This part with the 16hours is called Intermittent Fasting(IF) and I do this everyday. It's easy because a big chunk of my 16 hours is spent sleeping at night and I sleep around midnight so if I have supper by 8pm then I get 4 hours + 6 hours sleep = 10hours then I just push myself to eat my 1st meal for the day after midday by drinking coffee, water or green tea.
