Dink Dumper's Journal, 13 April 2015

Last month my doc told me I have high blood pressure, so I started the DASH diet and started exercising again. I had become complacent for the last year or so in the wake of other medical problems. Since I began attempting to eat less sodium I have received a disturbingly fatalist reaction from my family. My brother and mother have both said, in so many words, that lower sodium equates to a lower standard of living. Salt = flavor. My brother gets angry when I say something about milk or dark meat chicken having alot of salt in it, like I'm taking food out of his mouth, or at least diminishing his enjoyment thereof. The kicker is that he drinks beer all day, eats whatever he wants, never exercises and still weighs 20 lbs less that me. Actually, comparing weights yesterday was the most discouraged I've felt since starting the diet. I will likely not weigh in anymore at all. If the doctor weighs me I'll post it here. This site is good for tracking calories in and out but regularly checking my weight falls somewhere between discouraging and humiliating for me.

This is all about you and your weight loss. You can't control what other people say and do, only your reaction to it. If it upsets them, don't talk about diet or sodium with it. Take control of your health. Living a long healthy quality driven life is what its all about. People associate food with love and get upset when people make changes. Don't compare your weight loss to anyone else. You are doing positive things for yourself. You are on your way. Don't let anyone discourage you. Maybe if they see how much your life improves they may want to follow. Take care of yourself.

what Suzi161 said! And--Salt isn't just bad for peeps with high blood pressure. clinical studies show even in people with low BP, salt can make arteries harder! it's hard to watch the salt. it makes eating out really difficult. so yea, salt probably = different standard of living (a higher one if you ask me) not just a complacent American! keep it up. I'm using the Dash For Weight Loss book. when it comes to sodium, you really have to check labels even on frozen or fresh chicken. they love to put sodium solutions in everything! I don't' usually post, but I think it's time. I know so much about nutrition, but I need help sticking to what I know. My hubby exercises to keep his weight down. that doesn't do it for me. I have physical issues that are always interfering. Eating healthy needs to be my way of life. have a great week!
