I'm certainly glad I exercised yesterday. My caloric intake demanded it. Otherwise, it would have been a backslide day. Although, I find it's necessary (read:crucial) to _carefully_ have those once or twice a week to keep the body from shifting into "starvation" mode, shutting down the fat burning engine. How many depends on how my body is reacting that particular week. I find it to be like playing poker. I have to correctly read my opponents hand (my opponent being my internal engine) and make the appropriate move for that week and hope I made the correct read.
