mg2449's Journal, 26 April 2013

It's been a solid couple weeks. Typical diet has been: eggs for breakfast (egg salad on workout days - yum!), hamburgers or carnitas for lunches with some salad (and bites of sweet potato), and a meat and veggie for dinner. Workout mornings include an additional 1/3 cup of yogurt, some blueberries, and a big handful of nuts. I've also been having some of the leftover coconut from making coconut milk with a little maple syrup (very small quantities) some evenings. I've been drinking a glass of magnesium citrate most days, and I need to remember to continue to drink plenty of water and the magnesium over weekends as well.

My workouts have been good. Sprinting feels good. I've done some of my sprints barefoot, which I liked, except that the turf feels a little sharp on my bare feet when I warm up. Oddly, when I start sprinting, I don't mind it at all. The rest of my workout has been ok. The types of free weight exercises I've been doing are a little difficult to progress with: free-weight bench with 25 lb in each hand is not super hard, but going up to 30 lb sometimes results in me not being able to lift the weights up. Still, I've gone up on free weight bench and incline bench. I'm still at 60 lb of assistance for pull ups and haven't been taking weight off very quickly - I'm a little behind schedule for getting to an unassisted pull up by the end of the year...I've still been doing yoga almost every morning, just a quick 10 minute series.

In other news, I went to the doctor last week because Alex insisted that my digestive issues demanded medical attention. My digestion has actually been pretty good overall, and the doctor didn't have anything particularly insightful to say. She mentioned that I could have IBS, and that I should stop taking the magnesium citrate (which is harsh) and take some Miralax and a stool softener. She obviously wasn't really listening to my symptoms. Anyway. Maybe I'll go to an actual gastroenterologist.

But the other important thing about that doctor visit is that the doctor ordered a bunch of blood tests for me, so I went back in and had my blood drawn the next day. The results came back a couple days ago. My blood panel was normal other than slightly low white blood count and platelets, which the doctor didn't think was a big deal. The cholesterol panel was normal other than a relatively high LDL, however when you look at the TC:HDL ratio (3.1) and the triglyceride-HDL ratio (0.98) they both indicate that I have fewer actual LDL particles.

I had requested to get a cortisol test but the doctor said that it should only be tested at a certain point in one's menstrual cycle, and since I haven't gotten my period since mid February, I am in no-man's-land on that one. (But I'm not pregnant - had that test done too. It's most likely stress, maybe diet. My period was also a little late the last time I DID get it.)

Other tests were a metabolic panel (normal, no vitamin deficiencies), a gluten sensitivity test (negative, but I don't eat gluten, so the test doesn't tell you anything), and a thyroid panel (normal, but it only tests TSH). I would really like a full thyroid test of DHEA, T3, RT3 and T4.

Other things... sleeping has been okay. I've had to use my mouth guard and it's sometimes taken me a very long time to fall asleep. I have been waking up at least once every night and have to go to the bathroom. I haven't been super high energy but haven't been super fatigued either. Stress went through the roof on Wednesday, the day before my annual review, but the actual review, yesterday, was total fine.
