A week ago Darcey (my lovely wife) and I watched the documentary Forks over Knives. It was pretty interesting and is based off of some research that was done all over china related to diet vs. cancer rates. There were a lot of exciting claims made about greatly reducing cancer and heart disease through a whole foods, plant biased diet. I tend to be on the skeptical side but it did start me thinking. About the same time we acquired a juicer. So what the heck? We bought a bunch and healthy food, made some juice and a bunch of healthy, meatless food.
In the meantime I went online and as it turns out there are some folks who have raised some questions about some of the claims made in the documentary but all the creditable critiques seemed to have problems with how the author may have jumped to a few conclusions and made some claims that are probably not completely founded but all of them seemed to agree that in general this type of diet is very healthy and will very likely greatly reduce the chances of dying young.
Those of you who know me are likely shaking your heads and trying to figure out just who hacked into my profile. I have been a lifelong carnivore and still very much like the taste of real meat. Please relax, I have not been kidnapped. Unlike many vegans I don’t have any problems morally eating animal products. Were not “stealing” eggs or milk and I still plan on hunting and fishing. Based on my past record I’m not in any real danger of ending up with a bunch of meat that I’m going to have to make some big choice about what do I do with it all.
So the day after Christmas we made our first batch of juice consisting of carrots, kale, cilantro, pineapple and a few other things that I can’t exactly remember. The taste wasn’t half bad and it sure makes you “feel good” knowing what you just drank. At this point I’m thinking it is at least somewhat likely that there is a “placebo effect” but who cares it still feels good. I also started cooking without meat. I know it sounds impossible but I really have to say I love a lot of what I have made. I fully expected the weight to start falling off but so far it hasn’t… I keep over eating because the food has been that good. The only thing that saves me is I am pretty consistent about working out 3-4 times a week.
I am committed to sticking with the new lifestyle for at least 30 days. At the end of that time I will evaluate how I will move forward. In my ideal plan I will still make room for at least some meat, but I’m not real good at moderation. In the past my “Cheat Days” and a way of turning into weekends and then I would slip right back into old habits. Only time will tell!
