***WAKE UP CALL***WAKE UP CALL***WAKE UP CALL***WAKE UP CALL***
10 days since my surgery. Started hurting around 1 in the morning on 12-18...went in to the doctor and was admitted for appendicitis. The scariest part of being sick was how my body responded to the illness. My heart rate was 155 by the time I made it to the doctor and I was spilling sugar in my urine. The nurse in me said the elevated heart rate was due to the pain...but I had no answer for spilling the sugar except "Diabetes"!!! I had seen the doctor just a week prior for PVC's (had them for 2 days nonstop)...at that time he increased my blood pressure medicine and WANTED TO ADD another to help control my heart rate/PVC's (It was 108 in the office). The PVC's stopped the day after my doctors appt. My blood pressure was fair and my heart rate was less than 90 at each check. My thoughts..."I dont need that extra medicine...I will just watch it and see how it goes". Again...the nurse in me playing doctor. Despite the oral and IV meds...my heart rate was still 118 when starting surgery. After surgery my heart rate immediately returned to normal, no more sugar in my urine, blood sugar levels were back to normal. The doctor says I am "deconditioned"...out of shape...and my body responded as such. I am now on 2 blood pressure medicines (one targets the heart rate as well) and have been told if I dont make some changes I will be diabetic soon. WONDERFUL! NO ONE IN MY FAMILY HAS DIABETES!!! Needless to say, It has been an eye opener for me. Recovering at home has given me an opportunity to do some planning/research and make some changes to my diet plan. Looking forward to better health!

It sad that it takes something so serious to get us on the path to health. For me it was the possiblity of ending up in a wheelchair as my knees were wearing out. But better late than never. This web site has helped me hugely. Tracking my food, learning about nutrition and the support of the people here has been invaluable and for the first time in my life I think I might actually reach a reasonable weight and maintain it.
