Nimm's Journal, 16 July 2012

This is a pointless self-congratulatory update. Feel free to skip right by it until I get back to something useful.

I went out on Friday night with my wife to see some music in town. The kind of music you see in a large crowded room with lots of people who are in varying stages of sobriety. Hanging around chatting with friends after the show was over, a drunk tourist and his wife start introducing themselves to everyone in our circle, and he's commenting on everyone before he shakes their hand. When he gets to me he sticks out his hand and says (if I'm remembering it right), "And this guy who's all in shape and looking strong and scary, what's your name, buddy? Don't crush my hand when you shake it!" Since I was just wearing a plain black t-shirt (with sleeves) this was surprising. I won't lie, it was flattering coming from a stranger. I guess the bulking can't be going too poorly after all.

On a related note, my wife and I took our son out for an afternoon hike around the local lake the next day, and we got a few photos that I think turned out fairly well (if I didn't mangle them editing in Photobucket). I'm quite proud of the progress she's made too; I think she's down close to 80lbs.

Thanks erika, I'm just thankful I can look at photos of the two of us now without wondering when we're going to keel over dead from heart attacks. I'll have to a proper before-and-after one of these days - I think we used to be a collective 450 or 460 lbs.

You two look great! I especially envy your wife's collarbones... I can't wait to see them on my healthy and fit body eventually. Nice example for your son. When my son asks why I am exercising on the treadmill, I tell him it is so I can get stronger to do more fun stuff with him.

@Lindsay6384 - Thank you. It was my son's birth that motivated all of this in the first place. I do my lifting at home, and every time I do, he follows me into the room and watches the entire time. Sometimes he tries to imitate what I'm doing with some of the equipment. Even if I didn't enjoy it for its own sake, that alone would motivate me.

@Jess, Bkeller, and vmango - Thanks! I don't like posting journal entries about myself too much, since it just feels like I'm fishing for compliments, but...even I get a little bored talking shop all the time. A little personalization now and then isn't a bad thing, right?

@Heidi - Funny you should mention that. The re-appearance of her collarbones on some progress photos earlier this year was a big milestone for her!
