NanaKP's Journal, 29 October 2017

Ran into a blood glucose crisis this week. Woke up to an alarm on my Dexcom glucose monitor at about 2:00. It was a sound I had not heard previously. Apparently I slept through many normal alerts because it starts to alert at 80, and it was down to 40. Took three packets of jelly (15 carbs) waited 15 minutes and checked bg again. It was up to 69, so I took 10 more carbs, and within minu test I was receiving a high alert meaning bg was over 200. It continued to alert all night long, sometimes going up over 250. I tried walking around the building which usually helps but nothing worked. At about 4:30, I called Ernie, knowing there was nothing he could do but keep me company on the phone. I finally felt unafraid enough to fall asleep. When I woke, I had a Chobani flip. Next two awakenings, I nuked Hormel Compleats meals. Between food, I was just too weak to do anything. Still exhausted and out of caffeine but need to go pick up Ern for his dialysis . I will stop at Walmart neighborhood grocery on the way to pick him up, grab my diet Coke and dog food so I don't run out of puppy food. Then after dropping him off, I'm going to try to sleep for the four hours he is there. Hopefully I will feel rested by the time it is time to take him back to the SNF. Now I'm off. Hope you have a great day.

That is a crazy drop to a crazy spike in your blood sugars. Next time you are at Walmart pick up Reli-On Glucose Shot (drink). They're 15g of fast acting Carbs. You will find them near the Pharmacy section, where they have the alcohol pads. I always carry these with me. I am type 1 diabetic.

Be sure you are eating a protein with a carbohydrate in all your meals and snacks. The protein will keep your blood sugars leveled out as the carbs burn off. Be sure they're quality proteins (meats, eggs, dairy). On your plate, portion it as follows: half plate non-starchy vegetables, 1/4 plate carbs, 1/4 plate meat. If you're going to eat a couple of bites of a sweet, keep that in mind and spare some of the carbs on your plate. Yogurts with fruit, cheese and crackers, peanut butter and cracker, peanut butter and half a banana, sugar free ice cream, these are snacks with good protein/carbohydrate combinations

Thanks for the advise. Will look for the Reli-on Glucose. I always have 15 fast acting carbs next to my bed. Don't understand the spike and continued high. As far as "The plate", I don't control portions. I eat what they put on my plate which is definitely NOT the proportion I ate before moving here. For example, when I made broccoli, I always steamed enough so I had 2 cups. Here I try to ask for extra and it is never close. Here we always have a choice of egg. I want meat with my egg. Sometimes there is bacon or sausage. They also come around with assorted hot and cold cereal. I don't do cereal because of the carbs. They push bananas which I don't take for the same reason. Leaves me with eggs. Some days they offer cinnamon buns or, pear muffin. Sheesh. I have had the argument with management but it is like talking to a brick wall. Ok, I've whined enough. Gonna find my pjs and bed. Oh good thoughts. I calculated my weight since starting here in January and i've lost 32 lbs. Just like the tourtis. Slow and steady wins, Take care fs friends.
