Cabbage leafs compresses (on the skin, under the bandage & cast - partial cast; changed 3-4 times/day) seem to really help with the bruises and the swelling on the ankle - for "sprained ankle & partially broken tendons and/or ligaments" (the doctor's diagnosis). Actually... they seem to be the thing that works best, until now, for helping with this - in case anyone ever needs this, hopefully not. :)

Relax and allow yourself to heal...maybe do upper body work in the meantime? You could get awesome arms! LOL

Cabbage is actually great for anything swollen or infected or bruised! ;) It's kind of a "traditional cure" here (I'm from Romania) and even though it worked (for me too) in many cases and for many problems, I didn't expect it to work so well on this! It did: my foot is less swollen and it hurts less with touch (when stepping on it too, but I guess that's from the time passed since "the accident" :) ) and it's a lot less bruised (bruising and swelling didn't go almost at all before doing this). The skin looks clearer of redness and of nasty stuff too, beside the subsiding swelling. A few years back my mother got a toe infection and after she finally started paying attention to it, she was on different strong antibiotics for 3 months (both internal and unguents) and they did nothing, nothing obvious at least, lol. She then wrapped it in FRESH SMASHED CABBAGE LEAVES for a few days and in less than a week it was ALL gone - this like an example what it can do :). It's cheap and year-round available, so... you may try it for your back one evening when you're free and stay at home and feel like it - what bad thing can it do, right?! It's just cabbage (doesn't matter which type - those with less sturdy vines are easier to use; out of laziness, I smash it in my hands, though I could do it better in other ways)! It doesn't help with my tendons or ligaments and I don't expect to, but it helps me with the swelling and bruising. Here, in Romania, it is said that cabbage leaves "draw stuff" (good for big zits on the face too :D ), if I'm to try and translate it as accurate as I can :) . They're supposed to have something to... "draw" for them to work, stuff like infections, blood that's not supposed to be there, swelling etc.. Older people here tend to put cabbage leaves wrapped in long socks around varicose legs - they probably won't solve the problem, but they say it helps diminish it, so... :) . ;) Well... it worked for me :). I was considering putting pictures here (I looked for pictures like this and I couldn't find many that were useful) with different stages etc. of the ankle sprain, but in the hospital they used an acrinol solution on my leg and it looks disgusting with yellow skin and all the bruises :).

@HCB - I tried the upper-body stuff in the first days after the cast, but now I've became too lazy and eager to get out of the house :) . Funny fact: for the first.. 3-5 days... I jumped around the house, almost non-stop, on only one leg and with the other lifted, firmly, up): I ended up with a very strong muscle fever on just one butt cheek and the other leg's thigh - that calmed me down... a loot! Now I'm trying to get myself to bring the ab bench back and start using it again - looool :))))))))
