madanjen's Journal, 20 May 2015

I guess I burned all the excess calories or extra liquids I had this weekend, losing .4 pounds and getting in the 210's again. Please, if you don't read anything else, please answer the question at the end of this journal entry. Thanks.

Why do we have Holidays? Now I have to work out extra hard since I know there will be BBQ's etc. Plus Memorial day is one of those bittersweet days. My dad died on Memorial day a couple of years back. He was a 101st Airborne Screaming Eagle so I appreciate the tribute to our brave servicemen but the fact that he died on that day brings out a multitude of emotions. I look back at all the fond memories to make it sweet and not bitter. And thinking it over his funeral had some good memories. I know this may sound odd but he was laid to rest at a military memorial park and got full military honors with a 21 gun salute. I guess the honors he received is what made it good, since it made me proud, instead of extremely sad. I usually don't write this much but Memorial Day always has an impact and elicits emotion.

QUESTION: Can you share what you put in for activities to determine the daily calories burned. Other than the exercises I do, I have 8 hours of SLEEP and the remaining hours as RESTING. I never get 8 hours of sleep, I get 6 or 7 but close enough. The issue is the RESTING hours. I work. Though it's office work, it involves getting files, working on computer, getting printouts, yelling at idiots on the phone (just kidding, I meant talking), and other things one would do in an office. Also, I usually prepare my own meals, since it's easier to control nutrition and calories this way and many days, I don't go into the office. I also don't like dishwashers so I wash my own dishes. So I probably spend at least 2 hours in preparation and cooking meals. Finally to the question...DO YOU TAKE THESE THINGS INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU ENTER YOUR ACTIVITIES OR DO YOU DO IT LIKE I DO? I want to be accurate on this.

Watermelon at BBQ's, not potato salad. It works, and you still feel full.

Thanks for sharing Linda. I asked because it's been so long since I began using this, I can't remember if FS only gave you two options in setting your initial calorie used count, sleep and rest. I guess my question should have been are there other activity options FS offers on this site. I understand what Linda is saying about the weight loss, just a curiosity on my part and maybe a way to fine tune things.

I work a desk job, and there is actually an option listed in the exercise section titled "desk work." On the days that I work, I plug it in. I'm not certain how accurate it really is, but its better than resting for 16 hours a day!

Yeah xohhjeez, Lol. About the only rest I allow myself to have lately is being at my desk. I will put in 8 hours to give this a bit more accuracy. I get OCD at times about things! Lol. Thanks for the tip.

There is a desk work option and a sitting option. I use that one when I'm reading, crocheting, or riding around with DH. I'm always adjusting the sleep one. I make sure my activities add up in hours to the time I'm up. Sometimes I have to add extra sitting because FS's time for walking doesn't match in the calories. I match the calories to my pedometer. The problem is that I walk 3.2-3.5 mph and the only opt are 2, 3 or 4 mph.

Thank you for your dad's service! Not only did he serve, his family served with him. As for your question, I put in desk work on the days I work and I'll add exercise in if I did any, but that's usually it. So I'll have rest, sleep, and desk work. On the weekends, depending on what I do I may put in shopping, housework, or yard work, but it all depends on how long and how hard I actually work.

I don't usually worry about tracking every minute of the day. I put in any focused workouts that I do. Some days I will filling the computer/cooking/housework/driving/etc, but it sort of depends on my mood. :)

When I was still tracking my exercise I entered just my exercise and 1 hour of housework, sometimes it was more, sometimes it was less. You don't burn many calories with it anyway. You can log in stuff like desk work and driving but usually the estimated calories burned are overexagurated.

I try to track it close so I can see how I am doing, but some days is better than others.

I enter anything that was not part of my fat life. In the past I would NEVER walk to lunch, so if I walk to lunch I enter it. Now that I am running a fair bit that walk does not do much, but I still enter it. I count the daily stuff I have always done (walking around the office, up the stairs to accounting, etc) as bonus. I don't write them down. It makes up for the mint that I had after dinner that I didn't write down or the fact that I estimated the weight of some food incorrectly. The more accurate the better, but we also have lives to live. I believe/hope that the errors cancel themselves out over time as long as you are making an honest effort. Also the trend will still be correct, if you never record that small stuff, then your increase in exercise, decrease in calories consumed over time will show your true trends. Good luck

I don't track my exercise like I used to, since I am just maintaining my weight now instead of losing weight, but I think I remember logging "Standing" when I would stand at the sink to wash dishes.

I don't consider what I do where my daily calories is concerned. I have a set maximum and try to stay as far below it as I can without getting sick. Some days cravings take over and mess me up, but if I stay below to begin with, it gives me some room.....
