8Patty's Journal, 18 March 2018

I would like to enter my exercise properly but can't on here. At the gym the machine calculates it much lower which I believe is correct. Any suggestions you exercise people?

I noticed that too. I've just been adjusting the time so it's somewhere between what the treadmill says and what the app says

Go to your exercise scroll through it should be one that says add custom exercise type in your gym put in your calories & your time that's how I do mines

I don't know. I've been doing some exercises on the floor at home. Various kinds of leg lifts, I'm even managing a few sit ups. Don't know to call it in FS but listed it under light calisthenics. Don't know about the gym. I log my exercising but really don' t pay any attention to what is says about carbs used. For me it just is to keep track of when I actually do something. Maybe I shouldn't have answered you asked for suggestions from exercise people. My exercise of choice is either walking or hiking!!

I enter cardio in with "custom exercise" and just put the time and cals burned. For weights I use JEFIT. Tbh it's all estimates and not an exact science. As long as you're eating a balanced diet and maintaining a caloric deficit then you're guaranteed to lose lbs on a scale.

The rate of calories burned depends on your weight, and sometimes these machines have a set weight. If you can input your weight (and height, ideally), that may make the calorie burn more accurate. OTOH, I know that I typically overestimate how much any particular exercise "costs" in calories.

Usually machines will give an estimate, same with etched. They’re not 100% accurate of course, many are way off, that’s because everyone’s body reacts different with too many variables. So it gives an idea, and apps like this one for cals burned are probably not as accurate than a watch/machine. Watches are a little better because they measure heart rate, but it really depends on the individual. I had a really good calorie watch but regardless of it saying I burned 500 cals on X exercise or 2000 cals in X hours of work. I know that my body wasn’t burning those amounts, so I did away with the watch, in that example, didn’t do squat for helping me be any more accurate than what I’m already doing without it or other estimates... So the calorie estimates can help, but it just depends on the person in the end of it.

Fat Secret exercise numbers are time based estimates using population averages...myself and many long term FS members have found them to be usually a bit too optimistic, erring on the high side. As Deadpool mentioned, there are other methods to use, none are perfect.... heart rate based activity monitors while not perfect can give a reasonably consistent estimate as they are based on both time and your personal effort to estimate your calorie burn for each session, walk, run, bike, shovel snow, etc.... Eg. I log my exercise by adjusting my minutes in FS exercise to my calorie burn estimates based off of a heart rate based estimator (Garmin)...not perfect but it works ok. Note, the fitbits can synch directly into FS. Hope that helps, good luck :-)

BTW, calorie estimates from exercise machines can vary a great deal too, useful for comparative purposes but not as exact measurements of your calorie burn, again not perfect but probably ok if taken with a grain of salt...

I wear my fitness watch, it has my history, B/P, HR and 02 sat while working out, I think it's really good. Keeps me motivated to look at the calories it says I burn, if nothing else, it keeps me moving.

I agree with those who say no method is perfect. I use a heart rate and step counter to monitor my activity. I wear a Fitbit Charge 2...

we could petition Fat Secret to allow us, to work with our activity devices, and or, to change the data we have for workouts, or better yet, it would be awesome, if they created an APP! However,Humana has GO 365, sadly my device is not included in the list of devices they allow! If anyone has Humana, and does not know about the GO 365 plan, they should look into it, you get points for every workout, and many other activities, then you trade the points for gift cards, or gifts!

the values on this site are not always accurate so I really use this site for a reference - I run real numbers for my food of the labels and log it here - same for my workouts.

the point is that you are out and exercising - that is what counts.

Great answers and insite ty Fat Secret Family! I never noticed the custom link on the fs exercise as Laque pointed out. I'll just enter what the machine at Planet Fitness tells me. My doc says to slow down I'm working to hard how is that possible geeze the guy next to me burned over1K on the bike of course he's just a young wippersnapper lol.❤️
