erikahollister's Journal, 19 August 2016

Well, I ended my fat fast tonight. I did a ketogenic fat only fast for 6 days. I lost 6 lbs. Now we'll see how much of that loss sticks around. It was quite doable; the fat keeps you from being hungry. I drank two Bullet Proof coffees -decaf- each day and ate pure butter if I got hungry. It is a very abnormal way of eating, and though some people do it over long periods and continue to lose 1 lb/day, I don't think it appeals to me as an on-going diet. As a way to shove off of a plateau, yes, and for that it seems a good tool in my tool kit, or as a way to jumpstart a diet. I will go back to my usual LCHF diet with IF - intermittent fasting. I have now lost 75 lbs with 50 to go. In the next few day I will be on vacation with my family in Vermont, so while I'll try to eat LCHF, I'm not going to hyper focus on diet. Any way this was a worthy experiment; I'll let you know about the rebound. It way kind of fun to see family members who haven't seen me for awhile. I did get some complements on my weight loss. Have a good evening FS friends!

That was a bit confusing. I was at a funeral today with one branch of the family and going to Vermont with the other branch tomorrow.

Is a ketogenic diet and an lchf diet the same thing?

Thanks for the update and analysis, Erika! I bet the family members who haven't seen you in a while were a *little* blown away by the change! I agree that the fat fast is a useful tool, but not necessarily a good ongoing strategy. I bet you looked great in that dress! So proud of you, girl!

Great progress Erica. I can do the coffee, but I don't think I could eat plain butter. I can and do cook with plenty of it, but just eat it? Not so much. I'll be interested to see what happens as you come off the fast.

I've been thinking about a fat fast......think I'll try it...butter in coffee and...my idea....frozen chunks of coconut oil (instead of butter).....

@fatandfuriously fasting - ketogenic or Low Carb High Fat diets induce your body to produce ketones by depriving it of ingested glucose. This has the effect of lowing insulin levels, and when this happens your body taps into fat reserves for energy. The resulting product is ketones which feed your brain and organs in the absence of glucose. Since you are losing your stored fats for energy, you lose weight. The Bullet Proof Rapid Weight Loss Protocol that I did for 6 days is a fat only diet with nearly O carbs or protein. It lowers insulin, so that the body is forced into ketosis. My ketone levels were very high. It's not a sustainable diet, but more like a fast to reset set points and break a plateau.

Great, if Triglycerides are converting to glucose and that fat is coming from our fat stores then we're losing weight - that's the point. Nevertheless the brain loves ketones.

I'm not a chemist, I'm a dieter. I do what works best for me. I lose the most weight on a high fat diet, so that's my practice. I've regained health on a number of scores: feel better, look better, feel happier. I won't argue with a 75 lb loss without hunger. Oliver, I'm going on vacation now.

I listen to my doctor and all the other doctors who see ketogenics as a heart-healthy and healing way of eating. They are making amazing breakthroughs with their patients by the 10's of thousands. Maybe you could do a little research into it? Why would I listen to anyone else?

I hope you enjoy your visit to New England. We are in a bad drought this year, but no floods or fires like the rest of the country. I live in southern Massachusetts near the ocean. We are having a beautiful summer.
